The story of the Speedmaster began in 1957, when OMEGA’s Claude Baillod designed the watch for his manager, Head of Creation Pierre Moinat. The first few models (CK2915 and CK2998) had a symmetrical shape and were replaced by the a-symmetrical case as we happen to know it now, in 1963. When the Speedmaster was chosen by NASA to become part of the astronaut’s equipment, OMEGA added the wording ‘Professional’ on the dial in 1965. The rest is history and has been discussed and documented by many, including here at Fratellowatches.

Besides the Moonwatch, OMEGA developed and produced a number of Speedmaster watches that were not part of the Professional series. We would say that the Speedmaster ‘Reduced’ is probably the most popular non-Moonwatch Speedmaster and that the Speedmaster Automatic ‘Holy Grail’ the most sought-after model. For now at least.

This article is all about the new OMEGA Speedmaster Co-Axial Chronograph ref. 311.30.44.51.01.002 with the in-house caliber 9300 movement. This two register Speedmaster chronograph was introduced during BaselWorld 2011 but has been a bit in the shadow of the (also) newly introduced Seamaster Planet Ocean line-up. The new Speedmaster non-professional does not get the attention it deserves to be honest.

It is not a Speedmaster Professional, so we won’t do a comparison. But let us say this: The Speedmaster Co-Axial Chronograph is meant for those who love the NASA heritage, the Speedmaster-cult status and the design of the ‘original’ but need a watch with a date, an automatic mechanical movement and – perhaps – an in-house movement.

OMEGA was able to send us a Speedmaster Co-Axial Chronograph for review purposes and in short: we had a hard time giving it back. The size of 44.25mm is more modest on the wrist than it seems by specification, so don’t let this scare you. The dial of the watch is simply mesmerizing and very thought-through with only 2 sub registers. OMEGA combined the 12 hour recorder with the minute recorder in one sub register, which is quite easy to read when using the chronograph to time certain things (we timed a few long trips with this watch).

We’ve heard people commenting on the watch that there is too much distance between the sub registers, however, our logical explanation would be that when the sub registers would be more close to the center pinion, the short end of the chronograph second hand could possibly block the view of one of the sub registers. Our other guess is that people need to adjust to this lay-out and can’t stop comparing the Speedmaster Professional ‘Moonwatch’ with this Speedmaster Co-Axial Chronograph.

Before we get to the previously mentioned in-house chronograph caliber 9300 (also discussed here in detail), let’s have a look at the new Speedmaster bracelet. A comfortable Oyster-style bracelet with ‘Speedmaster’ engraving in the clasp. The clasp is identical to those on previous Speedmaster models, using two pushers to open and a simple but firm ‘click’ to close. The links of the bracelet are connected to eachother using screws instead of pins. Well, that’s not entirely true. There is a pin inside, that is being locked by two small screws on each side.

We expressed our worry about losing one of the two screws and thus losing the pin inside. Head of Development of OMEGA ensured us that this system has been tried and tested and that you shouldn’t fear. During our period of testing this Speedmaster Co-Axial Chronograph, no issues occurred with the bracelet.

During the test period of this watch, we’ve been invited by OMEGA to visit their revamped museum in Bienne (reported here, lots of pictures), have a lunch with CEO Stephen Urquhart and visit the production facilities of the Co-Axial escapement and their new in-house movements.

Unfortunately, we could not take pictures during the factory tour, but let us assure you that OMEGA does everything it takes to make sure the movements meet all requirements by both COSC, OMEGA and you, the critical customer. The new caliber 9300 chronograph movement is chronometer certified (which means it is very accurate – between -6/+4 seconds deviation per day – and will be for at least 5 years) and will not disappoint you in terms of look & feel. Look & feel? Yes, we think it is important how a chronograph ‘feels’ when operating the start, stop and reset buttons. We’ve had multiple comments on our test watch from (watch)friends who noticed that the start/stop mechanism feels like silk. With ‘look’ we mean the esthetics of the movement, which is in this case, sheer beauty.

Because we also witnessed the production process of the new range of in-house movements, we’ve seen that a lot of effort and time is being put in finishing all the various parts of the movement. Both those you can see through the transparent case back but also those that can’t be observed by the wearer of the watch.

RJ examining tiny movement parts @ OMEGA Factory

Talking about the transparent case back, this is – in our opinion – one of the coolest extras on this Speedy. It seems that the sapphire crystal they used for the case back is almost identical to the one on the front of the watch (which isn’t the case of course). This results in a very domed crystal on the case back, which you will definitely notice when wearing it on your wrist. The transparent case back catches sun light in certain angles, which gives it a very interesting look. The photo below should demonstrate this.

When you flip the watch, you”ll get a great view on the caliber 9300 movement. Partly, because the movement is covered by a main plate that covers most of the gears and gear trains. However, because the case back is entirely made out of sapphire, the view is still impressive. The finish of the movement and rotor clearly makes up for this. Also, the silicon parts are also noticeable through the sapphire crystal.

Although the watch is significantly larger than the Speedmasters we are used to be wearing, it is one hell of a comfortable watch as a daily wearer. Despite the diameter of 44.25mm it wears comfortably on the wrist and it actually tooks us only a few minutes before we were used to it (instead of wearing 39/40mm diameter watches). Because we have and have had our share of Speedmaster Professional watches, we certainly appreciate the fact that OMEGA kept using the design of the case that mr. Claude Baillod came up with in 1957.

The position of the pushers, crown guards and crown does remind us of the design of the Speedmaster Automatic ‘Reduced’, where the crown is somewhat smaller (because automatic instead of handwound) and is located deeper between the crown guards. The large black dial is being magnified from certain angles due to the [super] domed sapphire crystal and makes it extremely readable in combination with the white baton hands. Also cool, the date aperture located on 6 o’clock shows a black date wheel and a silver colored date. Completely in line with the printing on the tachymeter.

A bit hard to capture on a picture, the lume is great as well. The hour markers and hands stay bright for a long time only after being exposed to (sun) light for a few moments.

Setting time and date is very easy, just pull out the crown in the 2nd position (2 clicks) and move the hour and minute hands and put the crown in the first position (1 click) to set the date. The date is being set by moving the hour hand independently from the minutes hand. This takes a bit longer than you are used to with a quick set date, but it’s manageble. It is a similar to setting the date on a Rolex GMT-Master II.

If we have to mention something critical about this watch, perhaps this would be it: the lack of a quick-set date. However, it didn’t bother us until we had to change the date and we soon forgot about it again when the watch was back on the wrist.

We’ve noticed that some people have difficulties with the price tag of this Speedmaster Co-Axial Chronograph. This OMEGA lists for 6.400 EUR (approx $ 8250.- USD). These kind of prices were – and perhaps are –  quite unusual for OMEGA but comparing this Speedmaster Co-Axial to chronograph watches of other brands with similar features and built quality it is actually not that expensive. The Speedmaster Professional retails for much less, but again – this is not a Speedy Pro and definitely has some advantages over the hand wound ‘Moonwatch’.

Exactly one year ago, I bought an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Chronograph (also nick named ‘ROC’) ref.26300 to accompany my precious Royal Oak ‘Jumbo’ ref.15202. I added the ROC because I missed the thicker bracelet and case of the Royal Oak ‘Date’ ref.15300 I previously owned.

The AP ROC has become one of my favorite watches and is always in my weekly watch rotating programme (something I learned to do from Chuck Maddox). The ‘Newman’ or ‘Panda’ dial combination has become a popular model amongst the Audemars Piguet ROC fan base, given the times this exact configuration pops-up at the ‘new watch’-threads at TimeZone’s Audemars Piguet forum.

The picture above was taken and posted by Luke (TrA), a regular visitor of TimeZone.

The owner of the wacth picture above, Luke, explains to the readers that although the watch only measures 39mm in diameter, it certainly wears a bit bigger. He writes: Its size and profile make it both elegant and sporty IMO. The red accents on the dial give it some drama and urgency (it is a chronograph after all!). Check the small report on his new watch here. He considered the Royal Oak Offshore Chronograph ‘Panda’ as well as the Royal Oak Offshore Diver (which we reviewed here).

A long term report on the Audemars Piguet ROC ref.26300ST will be up soon.

Question by ATX Prodigy™

A very simple question, but basically which on-air talents do you think are the ones that are bringing the best to TNA at the moment? Who are your favorites to watch?

For me its:

1) AJ Styles – He’s probably my favorite wrestler to watch nowadays. He’s just so unique to everybody else & I can honestly say that I have never changed the channel during an AJ Styles match (even if it was bad) He’s just a great wrestler with a great presentation that LOTS of Indy wrestlers have tried to mimic (this was especially true about 5 years ago) Anyways, here’s hoping that by the time 2009 is up, AJ Styles has another World Title reign under his belt.

2) Beer Money Inc – Oh fuck yeah, I love these guys. Best Tag Team in the business right now. Their presentation is great. They are fantastic heels when they want to be, but have also proven recently that they are great faces as well. I remember how disappointed I was that they formed this team because I saw both Roode & Storm as future main eventers, but now I think I’d be heart broken if they split up. That’s how good they are as a team. They haven’t quite won the praise of AMW as the best tag team in TNA history, but they are definitely up there (I’d say they are in at least the top 3 teams in TNA history)

3) The Beautiful People – They saved the KO division. Before Angelina Love won the title, we had a Sarah Palin gimmick, an extremely stale champ in Awesome Kong, Sojo Bolt in the title picture, & a Night with ODB….gulp. But now, Angelina Love has proven herself to probably be the best heel in the company at the moment as she is so easy to hate, and Velvet Sky is definitely a great second hand to her. They might not be the best wrestlers in the KO Division, but they are definitely what the doctor ordered and have been a great presence in TNA. And of course you gotta love those shots of them entering the ring!

4) Suicide – Fans on the net seem to be mixed on him, but I think he’s great. Cool look, great gimmick, and he’s great in the ring. The X Division was extremely stale before he entered into it, and now that he’s made a splash, the X Division has a basic storyline to follow, which is something it lacked for a while. Suicide is great, and here’s hoping he sticks around for a while because he’s a pleasure to watch.

5) The Motor City Machine Guns – These guys have a pretty damn good spot with TNA as they work great in the tag team division, but also as top contenders for the X Division title, making them very versatile. Both guys are fine wrestlers, and Shelley is a great talker, so their presence on TV is usually a welcomed one.

6) Samoa Joe – Like Suicide, fans on the IWC seem mixed on the whole “Nation of Violence” thing, but I’m loving it. Joe is just going out there and killing people, and its awesome. Basically Joe is now doing to the heavyweights what he used to do to the X Division guys back in 2005, and its awesome. I think there is great potential with Joe to make him a top heel, but for right now he’s great.

7) Daniels – Daniels has made a big impact since his return in April. Not only did he really elevate the Main Event Mafia storyline going into Lockdown, but also contributed to the X Division becoming better recently. Its great to have The Fallen Angel back (even if they aren’t calling him that) and I’d love to see him at least get a PPV title shot at some point.
8) Matt Morgan – Watch out for this guy. He’s big, athletic, a great talker…I mean he’s got everything. All the tools are there and by having him involved with The Main Event Mafia, I think you might see Morgan take off and hopefully get elevated to the next level.

9) The British Invasion – Lots of potential in this team. Its amazing how I and many others just wrote off Brutus Magnus as a failure, but sticking him with Doug Williams was a great move and they’ve proven that they are just damn good. Magnus might also be one of the best talkers in TNA, and in addition to all his physical gifts, he might be a keeper for TNA for years to come. I’ll be shocked if they aren’t tag champs at least once by the time this year is up.

10) Daffney – Another one of my favorite Knockouts, its great to have her back as her old WCW persona rather than the Palin gimmick. She is also somewhat of a showstealer when it comes to the Knockouts as her psychotic antics usually leave people talking about her.

Question by The Clown Prince of Crime

Tell me why for each match.

My favorite is The Undertaker, so:

1. The Undertaker vs Edge (Wrestlemania 24) – At First, I was torn between this, Undertaker vs Batista at Wrestlemania 23, and Undertaker vs Edge in Hell In A Cell (Summerslam 2009). But Undertaker vs Batista was voted by WrestlingGuide, ProWrestlingWorld, and WWE (their magazine) as WWE 2007 Match of The Year (Although IWC and PWI voted Shawn Michaels vs John Cena at Wrestlemania 23, I think it was fair enough, cause both matches are legendary anyway). And although Undertaker vs Edge HIAC didn’t win MOTY, we all knew Flair vs HBK won merely due to its emotional atmosphere. Even the MITB & Jericho vs HBK were better matches than Flair vs HBK quality wise. Not to mention many people regard the match as one of the best HIAC matches ever.

Now, quality wise, Taker vs Edge was better than Flair vs HBK. Sure, it wasn’t better than Undertaker vs Batista at Wrestlemania 23, but still, it got many spots when we thought Edge would have won (because he dominated 60% of the match), especially after the spear. I think Edge & Taker didn’t get the recognition they deserve. After Wrestlemania 24, people acted like the match was crap and HBK vs Flair totally owned the whole show. Well, HBK carried Flair throughout the whole match. Quality wise, that match was overrated. The good spot was when HBK said ‘I’m sorry, I love you”, and that’s it. Suddenly all people worship this not because the quality but because the outcome. Flair competed in a dark match at Wrestlemania 23 and he hadn’t even done anything due to his refusal to retirement. He wasn’t even a WWE legend, he is a wrestling legend. In top 10 2008 matches of the year created by many wrestling site, Taker vs Edge at WM 24 didn’t even make it to number 10. This match (along with Lesnar vs Angle at WM 19) is the most underrated WRestlemania main event of all time.

2. Undertaker vs Diesel (Wrestlemania 12) – Now, many would have claimed that Diesel (Nash) wasn’t that good as a wrestler. And whenever someone asked “What are the legendary matches Taker has ever had at Wrestlemania?”, many people with usually answer his matches with Sycho Sid, Masked Kane, Triple H, Ric Flair, Randy Orton, Batista, Edge, and Shawn Michaels. But I’ve rarely seen anyone mentioned this match, simply because ‘Diesel was due to be released by WWE, so we all knew Taker would have won”. Well, I think we all knew Taker would never lose at Wrestlemania no matter what. Diesel was one of the very few opponents who would fight back Taker’s mind games. The feud had a good storyline with a very back and forth match. I even dare to say, Diesel vs Undertaker at WM 12 was waaaay better than Orton vs Taker at WM 21. Just watch the match on youtube if u don’t believe me.

3. Undertaker vs King Kong Bundy (Wrestlemania 11) – We all knew Wrestlemania 11 would always be the worst Wrestlemania of all time. But this match is simply underrated due to that fact and the fact Bundy is a giant, because the stereotype ‘giants can’t wrestle’ has been haunting many giants since Andre. In terms of being a legend, of course Bundy isn’t on the same league with Andre The Giant, The Undertaker, Big John Studd, Yokozuna, or even Big Show. But he can really move for a giant. He even main evented WM 2. I think he is fairly better than Big Booby V, Mark Henry, and even Kozlov. Perhaps one of the biggest reasons why people tend to say The Streak is overrated is because WWE put Taker against too many giants where he could have better opponents. But, I believe Bundy wasn’t one of those giants. The giants who provided Taker with bad matches at Wrestlemania were Giant Gonzales, Big Show, A-Train, and Mark Henry, not Bundy. Taker vs Bundy was a great match considering Bundy is a giant. It is one of the best matches Taker has ever had with a giant in his long and illustrious career. This match is really overlooked. Taker vs Bundy was better than Taker vs Gonzales, Taker vs Show & A-train, and Taker vs Henry combined, really an underrated match.

4. Undertaker vs Big Show in Steel Cage Match (December 5, 2008–SmackDown!) – We can pretty much agree Taker never had a great match with Big Show. Most of their feuds and matches together were nothing but crap, but I gotta say this match stands out and perhaps one of the greatest matches Show would ever got in his career. Back and forth actions with a crazy crowd, it was simply the best match Taker and Show ever had together. But people tend to overlook this match and saying Taker-Show was crap.

5. The Undertaker vs Kurt Angle (No Way Out 2006) – This match was really intense with lots of back and forth action. This match was simply a Wrestlemania caliber match (too bad, Vince got turned on by Mark Henry), and even WWE voted this as their 2006 match of the year (on their magazine). But, I was so surprised when IWC and PWI voted HBK vs Vince at WM 22…I mean, WTF?! PWI voted Cena as the greatest legend of all tim

Best answer:

Answer by E & C- Connection Established
1.Edge vs Undertaker Wrestlemania 24- Exactly as you said, this match is probably among the most underrated matches in Wrestlemania history, as it was overshadowed by Flair vs HBK. Edge vs Undertaker is one of my favorite matches ever(being a fan of both). This match doesn’t get cthe recognition it deserves by the fans.

2. John Cena vs Edge Backlash 2009- This match was really just forgot about as soon as the PPV ended, at Backlash this last man standing fully delivered with many great spots involved such as Cena FU’ing Edge into the crowd and Big Show chokeslaming Cena into the spotlight, Edge spearing Cena in midair, Fu off the Turnbuckle etc. I really think this was underrated.

3.Edge vs Kurt Angle Hair vs Hair Judgment Day 2002- This match packed so much actual wrestling with Kurt and Edge fighting to keep their hair, that it was very close to a 5 star match. Many counters, holds and pinfalls were attemped, but in the end Edge came out vitorious.

4. Edge and Christian vs Hardy Boyz vs Dudley Boyz Wrestlemania 17 TLC2- I got the Edge: A decade of Decadence dvd not long ago, while it had great matches it failed to include this one, it may only be overlooked as it was the second time these 3 teams fought at a WM. Rhyno may have helped E & C win but it was just a sensational match to watch.

5. Edge vs Test Survivor Series 2001- It was not only to unify the WCW US title and the Intercontinental title but a great back and forth contest, this I think was Edge’s best match against a big man(apart from Taker) and this match fully deserves to be on the list.
