Volvo Ocean Race Team Puma.

Puma is competing in the 2011-2012 Volvo Ocean Race – a wild sailing adventure around the world. Different countries, organizations and companies sponsor sailing teams as they race across tumultuous waters and through exotic ports.

The Puma team has an American skipper, a sailor named Ken Read, and a split crew mostly comprised of Americans and Australians. Most recently the Puma team was in the port of Abu Dhabi, coming in at fourth in an in-port race.

Among the 170,792 boats present in this race, Team Puma is faring relatively well on its boat, the Mar Mostro. In doing so, they are promoting their products – including new watches.

Known as an athletic brand, Puma is living up to its standards in the watch department. Several new Puma collections have been released this year.

Apparently not content with chronograph speeds of 1/1,000th of a second, TAG Heuer have gone ahead and built a new concept watch, the Mikrogirder which has the ability to time events to 1/2,000th of a second. But that’s not even the most surprising element of the watch. It accomplishes all this without the use of a balance wheel or even that Pendulum concept we saw a few years ago. The movement developed for the Mikrogirder uses a vibrating linear oscillator to attain its freakishly fast pace of 1,000hz. What’s a linear oscillator? We hope to have an answer to that one soon.

You think you know fast chronographs? We’ve shown you Zenith’s Striking Tenth (1/10th of a second), FP Journe’s Centigraphe (1/100th of a second…kind of) and TAG’s own Mikrograph (1/100th of a second), but none of those come close to TAG Heuer’s Mikrotimer Flying 1000 Concept watch, a piece first unveiled at Basel live on HODINKEE.

The Mikrotimer measures up to 1/1000th of a second and does so with an incredibly powerful caliber.  To give you an idea of just how fast and powerful this caliber is, the Zenith El Primero (what TAG calls the Caliber 36) runs at 5 Hz. TAG’s 1/100th of a second Mikograph runs at 50 Hz. The Mikrotimer runs at 500 freaking Hz.  So that means this caliber runs at 500 rotations per second! In other words, the El Primero runs at 36,000 beats per hour, the Mikrograph runs at 360,000 beats per hour, and the Mikrotimer runs at 3.6 million beats per hour! That just sounds fast, doesn’t it?. Well, if you look at the video above, you’ll see that it is.  It’s so fast in fact that it is often difficult to even see the sweep hand moving!

While the Mikrotimer is still in development, we just can’t help but applaud TAG for really pushing the limits of watchmaking with their high-end R&D department. Pieces like the Monaco V4 (which we showed you in the form of a unique steel prototype on Friday), the Mikrograph, and most certainly the Mikrograph, will help shape the future of mechanical watchmkaing.  Sure, the average TAG you see on the street may be powered by something off the shelf, but, TAG the manufacture is producing some of the most impressive calibers in the world right now.

I am 14 in Missouri. If I want to get a job can I get one at Sonic or Mr. Goodcents? I’ve heard Taco Bell is the only one that highers 14 year olds. I’ve also heard that fast food places don’t accept resume’s but all my life everyone has always said you need to have a resume to get a job.

You’re too young. 16 is MINIMUM. You do not need a resume to get a job at Taco Bell or any fast food restaurant unless you’re applying for management.
Resumes are for people with training and past work histories.
