Last week we showed you five watches from the May sales from Audemars Piguet that were all pretty awesome, and yet none of them were Royal Oaks.  Today, we are showing you two watches from AP in a May sale that are indeed Royal Oaks, but they aren’t just any Royal Oaks, they are two very special, super early Royal Oaks…

A while back my aunt gave me this old pocket watch as a gift. Until now I have never thought to take interest In it as I am now older. It is a very nice silver watch with a bronze truck on the front. I’m just wondering where it was made, how old it is, and maybe even possibly if it’s worth something. Thanks… I really don’t know much about it, so anything you can provide will help.

They had merchandise, including pocket watches, made for them, but didn’t make them themselves.

Question by OOPS I DID IT AGAIN!

i’ve never heard of that, n r this quality watches?

Best answer:

Answer by Lil Me
Yes, I’ve heard of it and they are actually pretty good watches.. You can actually find them along with Tag Heuer, Gucci, Dior and most of the high end watches…
I own a dinner watch from Titus, and it cost about 400 to 450 dollar… I think that’s one of the cheaper range…
So, with the kind of price it’s gotta be a pretty good watch!!

On July 1, 1941 the Brooklyn Dodgers played the Philadelphia Phillies. This game was televised, but before it began, something was shown that had never been seen before – a televised advertisment for a consumer product.  And for what was the world’s first televised advertisement?  A watch, of course.

The ad that begat all other ads was for Bulova wristwatches, one of the great American timepiece companies.

The ad is pretty simple by today’s standards, but that’s ok – it only cost Bulova $ 9. Priceless.

(Thanks for the tip Charlie)

Click To EnlargeWe all have that dream of digging through your grandparents’ attic to find a dusty old wristwatch.  In most cases, that never happens.  When it does, that watch is usually an Elgin (not knocking Elgin, just sayin there are a lot of em out there). Every now and then, when it does happen, the watch is important – like, say a split-seconds Patek Philippe chronograph retailed by Tiffany & Co.  The watch we have here is another one of those examples that is hard to believe, but true.

The watch you are looking at is the Rolex reference 6062, also known as the Rolex triple-date moonphase, or one of the most complex watches to ever bear the mighty crown on the dial.  It was produced from 1948-1953 in only 500 examples.  Rarely do you see them with “star” dials, which this one happens to have.  Even more rarely do you see them with the words “Officially Certified Chronometer” on the dial.  This one happens to have them.

But what trumps all these niceties of this particular 6062 is the condition.  Whoever purchased this watch likely took it home and, threw it in a sock, and let it sit there for the next 60 years (seriously, the watch was found in a sock, or so we’re told.)  The case shows absolutely no signs of polishing – the oxidation to the 18k gold case means it likely sat in darkness for its life – and its dial is completely pure with bright blue date scale.  Included are the actual original crocodile strap and gold buckle from purchase, too.  Perhaps our favorite trait of this 6062 is the original “Super Oyster” crown, though.

Everything about this Rolex is original. Everything. And that, to a vintage Rolex collector, is as good as gold. The pre-sale estimate on this triple-date moonphase is $ 150,000-$ 200,000 and it will be sold this Friday via Christie’s New York.  For more details on this truly exceptional Rolex, in our opinion the nicest 6062 to ever surface, click here.

Something To Consider: Sotheby’s NY just sold a similiar watch, a Rolex 6062 star dial (just 16 watches away from this one!!) for $ 62,500.  The condition on that watch was dramatically worse than the one featured here, so it will be interesting to see what type of role condition will play in the final selling price of very similiar timepieces.

Today is Thanksgiving in the US, which means most of you are going to be stuffed to the brim with turkey, potatoes, gravy, and well, stuffing.  So, in honor of a day where most US citizens don’t do much but sit around eat, drink, and watch TV, we’re bringing you the longest video we’ve ever shown on HODINKEE, but also the most beautiful.

Time Piece – Switzerland is a ten minute film produced by the wonderfully talented Kat Mansoor and Animal Monday.  It is, quite simply, the most beautiful film on watchmaking we’ve come across to date. We aren’t the only people who think so either, this film has been seen at many film festivals around the world and even won “Best of the Fest” at the Palm Spring International Film Festival in 2007.

The film revolves around two central figures – Vianney Halter and Philippe Dufour – two of the world’s most respected independent watchmakers (Vianney won watchmaker of the year just last week at the Geneva Grand Prix) and it offers a look into their own little worlds.  This film is just masterfully done so sit back, relax, and enjoy it.
