No matter what I do, I can’t find professional commentary on “Jobless on Edge of Pea Field” or “Country Road”. Can anyone help? I think it’s just a problem with what I’m typing in, but I would still appreciate any help.

I do need professional published commentary though.

This is probably about as obscure as a question can get. I don’t know who she is, but if you could provide a link to some examples of her work, I’d give you an honest critique. Can we go there?

A Lange & Sohne Question&Answer:

Question by rae-ann

I vaguely remember learning in college that there is a photographer who took a picture of Dorothea Lange’s “Migrant Mother” photograph. In other words, he stood in front of her photograph, and took a picture of it, and then put his photo of her photo in a gallery show.

It caused a debate because people questioned the ethical ramifications of this.

But the photographer was trying to say that a photograph (especially a famous one) is an object just like an apple or a celebrity. So he photographed the photograph.

But I can’t remember the photographer who did this. Does anyone recall this story?

Answer by Casey K
When you look at Paul Strands earlier work, like the Wall Street image, it seems more fine art to me. But after working with Lange, who he was heavily influenced by, it became somewhat documentary. Sorry, that’s all I’ve got!

What do you think? Answer below!

Question by Coco Rocha: what is a dorothea lange quote that describes her philosophy on the nature of journalism or her work? thx!?
thnx! 10 pts!

Best answer:

Answer by Pierrette L
Dorothea Lange, 1895–1065, artist hero and photographer extraordinaire left us a life of immortal photos. She also left us quotes unforgettable for their sensitivity and beauty of expression. Quotes reflecting her love and total dedication to her work. Every quote is a small jewel – a love song to her craft – an ode to her personal philosophy.

The camera is an instrument that teaches people how to see without a camera

One should really use the camera as though tomorrow you’d be stricken blind. To live a visual life is an enormous undertaking, practically unattainable. I’ve only touched it, just touched it.

Artists are controlled by the life that beats in them, like the ocean beats on the shore.

A photographer’s files are, in a sense, his autobiography. More resides there than he is aware of. …As fragmentary and incomplete as the archaeologist’s pot sherds, it can be no less telling.

The pageant is vast and I clutch at tiny details, inadequate.”
