Tourby Lawless Diver

I’m a fan of Tourby watches, even though I’ve never owned one. They are well made watches and I think the understated designs are very sensible and well thought out. They use a lot of classic style in their designes especially with their pilot watches. This new model is the Lawless diver, designed in collaboration with Brendan Lawless, an Australian Dive Watch enthusiast.

This new Lawless Diver is pretty incredible looking. I’d be quite interested in one myself, but the €925 price is scaring me a bit (This is international price, with VAT is €1099). Given that this is a very boutique watch company, you can be sure that the watch will plummet in value once its on your wrist. While that’s not a problem if you love your watches and never sell them necessarily, its can still be a deterrent to purchase.

At 45.5mm, its a beast of a watch, and has gigantic fat lugs to boot. The stainless steel case features 500m water resistance and a beautiful engraved caseback. The movement is the robust ETA 2824-2 Swiss movement. Real nice looking diver here. The Lawless is also available in a PVD case version.

Perrelet, one of the world’s most renowned and oldest watchmakers, has been making watches for over two decades. The name is associated with the first automatic winding mechanism and split-second chronograph. Now, Perrelet is well known for its turbine timepieces. The turbine watches feature a spinning rotor that is visible through the dial. The company has recently launched a new watch called the Perrelet Turbine Diver that combines the turbine with the dive watch. This 300 meter dive watch is available in black, blue, yellow, or white, and is currently priced from $ 6550 to $ 7200.

The Perrelet Turbine Diver comes in a 47.5 millimeters case. The case, which is water resistant to 300 meters, comes in the three different forms of steel, titanium, or DLC and has sapphire crystal on both sides that is anti-reflective and scratch resistant. Inside this watch is the Perrelet P331 double rotor movement, a self-winding mechanical movement that is unique to Perrelet. This movement can be observed through the sapphire crystal in case back. The upper motor has 11 blades and is made to look like the propellors of a submarine that is set to take off. The blades spin above a SuperLuminova coated surface that allows for diving at nice depths. Inside the case, the main hour marks, the black-rimmed hour and minute hands, and the Arabic numerals are also coated with SuperLuminova. This SuperLuminova coated surfaces absorb light during the day and unleash that light during the dark for easy legibility.

Another unique feature of this watch is the bezel. An inner bezel ring measures the dive time within a 20-minute cycle indicator. The indicator is clearly visible on the watch as it is in different color and volume from the rest of the bezel. This inner rotating bezel is controlled by a crown with a locking system at the 10 o’clock position. The crown is big enough for easy manageability and access. This crown is directly opposite from the winding crown that is located interiorly at the 4 o’clock position.

This Turbine Diver watch comes in different types of cases with variety of colorful dials to choose from. The rubber strap of the watch comes in color that matches the dial and has stainless steel pin buckle. Whether you are exploring a seabed or just adding to your watch collection, this timepiece will be a great investment. It is not only an attractive watch, but very functional as well.

In many ways, watch making is a work of art. Designers must balance design with technique to make their final product passes the stringent requirements of the trade, all while making the process look effortless. Perhaps this is why the Ulysse Nardin Champion’s Diver Watch honors Evgeny Plushenko, the three-time world champion in figure skating.

Just as figure skating seem deceptively easy to those not familiar with the sport, the Champion Diver watch blends years of watchmaking technique with the comfortable ease of its design. The watch is as easy to read as it is easy on the eyes, but the timepiece has plenty of functions underneath its smooth exterior.
The timepiece features self-winding movement uses a UN-26 caliber—a traditional element found in Ulysse-Nardin lines. With a 42 hour power reserve and indicator and a water resistance up to 200 meters/600 feet, this watch is perfect for divers.

The functions feature a unidirectional rotating bezel and chronograph for subseconds. The ceramic watchband, sapphire crystal dial window, and stainless steel and rubber casing all add to the weatherability as well as the wearability of this watch. The stainless steel case integrates vulcanized rubber to add extra water resistance, making the Ulysse Nardin Champion watch durable enough for even the most exacting athlete.
Even cooler than the functions is the treatment of the watch itself. The timepiece combines a cool blue and dark black with gold accents against a stylized dial that emulates gentle, rolling waves. Apparently, the color combination was decided on by Evgeny Plushenko himself. For him, the combination of colors reminded him of the blue of the ice and the gold of Olympic medals.

The color combination is not the only part of the watch to bear the Russian figure skater’s stamp: his signature is engraved on the back of each watch. Unlike some watches crafted to honor sportsmen, the Champion design process included Plushenko even from its very beginning design stages.
The watch is a limited edition, so prospective buyers had better make a move quickly if they want to bag this watch before it swims away. With only 200 watches in stock, these watches may soon be as coveted as an Olympic medal.
Want to wear the watch of a champion? The Ulysse Nardin Champion’s Diver Watch combines the majestic coloring of the ocean with Ulysse Nardin’s legendary watchmaking prowess to create a timepiece that will win as many honors as Evgeny Plushenko.

If Perrelet is known for one thing, it’s the turbine.  And this year at Basel World, we saw the line extended to include a dedicated, 300 meter dive watch.  The Perrelet Turbine Diver features a 47.5mm case (though it wears smaller, as seen in pic above on wrist) and the rounded contours of the upper rotor, featurnig 11 blades, is designed inspire thoughts of a Submarine’s propellors. The new diver features an inner rotating bezel operated by a crown at 10 o’clock and is available in steel, titanium, and DLC.

Inside the Turbine Diver is the Perrelet P331 Double Rotor movement, which is exclusive to Perrelet.  Actually, this movement is made by Soprod, who is owned by the Festina group, who also owns Perrelet – so this one is all in the family.

The Perrelet Turbine Diver will be available this year and is expected to start at $ 6550 in titanium and $ 7200 in DLC. Click through for more pics and stay tuned for some new relases from Perrelet to be featured soon.

German dive watch manufacturer UTS has announced availability of their new deep divers watch simply called the 4,000M. Available in three-hand or GMT versions, this 45 x 17.5 mm stainless steel watch will be best paired with a large wrist. The 4,000M (13,123 ft) water resistance rating has been achieved by using a 6mm thick sapphire crystal which, for reference, is half as thick as the entirety of my Omega Seamaster. Making it to 4,000M is not a lazy man’s game, for those keeping score that is 100m further than the Rolex Sea-Dweller Deepsea and this new UTS matches the water resistance of the ludicrous 48mm Hublot King Power Diver.

The three-hand UTS 4,000M is powered by the ETA 2824-2 while the GMT version sources its skills from the ETA 2893-2. The large stainless steel bezel is actually bi-directional and uses ceramic ball bearings for smooth and accurate action. The crown at two o’clock activates a locking system to keep the bezel safely set in place. Pricing is set at €4500 ($ 6000 USD) for the three-hander while the GMT will list at €5000 (~ $ 6650 USD). While this pricing is rather expensive given the 4,000M’s use of ETA movements, it is noticeably cheaper than the $ 10, 650 list price for the Rolex Sea-Dweller Deepsea (116660) or the $ 19,900 Hublot is asking for the titanium King Power Diver.

With only 200 units of each model being made, the UTS 4,000M will be more limited than its Rolex and Hublot counterparts. While we don’t fully understand the appeal of a watch capable of withstanding 4000m worth of pressure, there is no arguing that a market exists for these large and over-engineered timepieces. We have our fingers tightly crossed that UTS will some day announce a slim 200m diver that features much of their excellent styling and case design, but in package intended for the more slim-wristed among us (myself included).

Oris has revamped the Diver line with new Ceramic Bezels and updated cases. The new Aquis line features Stainless Steel Cases and Sapphire crystal and water resistances to 300m. They have added screwed-in crown guards for an extra touch of sophistication and a bit of faceting on the lugs as well. Nice looking pieces that update the look while still remaining quintessentially Oris in design.

There are two sizes available, a full size mens model at 43mm and a women’s sized model at 36mm. They are also available in two colors: Black and Blue. The photos appear to make the ceramic bezel insert on the blue model look glossy, while the ceramic bezel insert on the black model looks to have a brushed finish. Nice distinguishing features I think.

The watches continue with the integral style bracelets with an option for rubber as well. I like that they don’t have the rounded cushion sides that the older TT1 style had. I think that was my biggest dislike of the previous case. While I owned a couple and did really like them, the rounded case sides eventually started to bother me. Retail on the 43mm model is about $ 1,900US and $ 1,850 for the 36mm.

Specs:
Case Size: 43mm or 36mm
Dial Colors: Blue or Black
Case Material: Stainless Steel
Strap: Stainless or Rubber
Movement: Selitta SW-200

Yesterday (January 30), tennis player Novak Djokovic won the Australian Open against Rafael Nadal (Richard Mille ambassador). It has been a battle that lasted five sets and almost 6 hours. When he finally lifted the trophy, watch spotters immediately recognized the timepiece on the wrist of this Audemars Piguet ambassador. The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Diver, ref.15703ST. A perfect fit for a sportsman.

We’ve written a review about this exact same Diver a while ago (click here for our share of fun with the Diver 15703ST and a VW Phaeton) and we think it is the best looking Offshore that AP has to offer. Clean design, perfect size (42mm in diameter) and very versatile, especially when worn with the rubber strap or a leather horn back replacement. The ref.15703 AP ROO Diver is our near-perfect modern sports watch, we can imagine Mr Djokovic picked this one from the AP collection.

On the wrist. Who wears it better?

With this victory Mr Djokovic has consolidated his position as world number one and has started his season as well as in 2011. Let’s wait and see what will happen in 2012. It seems that the world top of tennis players are in good companion though, Djokovic and AP, Nadal and RM. Congrats!
