Today we have a brand new Jaeger-LeCoultre diving watch.  It’s called the Deep Sea Chronograph, and it is the modern extension of the Deep Sea line, of which, up until today, we’ve only seen vintage variations - the Deep Sea Alarm tribute of 2011 and the Deep Sea Vintage Chronograph.

It is with this new, three register, 42mm automatic chronograph that we see the Deep Sea line will not be for tributes only, but will encompass the entire JLC sport watch family.  Yes, this watch resembles the Deep Sea Vintage chronograph, but ultimately, this watch is very modern (we show you the two side by side, below).  It features sapphire glass, a rotating bezel, no faux-aged lume, and water resistance to 10 bar.  It’s larger than the vintage guys by about 1.5mm, and complies with all the criteria imposed on diver’s watches by the ISO 6425 standard.

Inside this new chrono is the JLC caliber 758 featuring with a 65-hour power reserve.  But, perhaps the most noticeable trait of this new JLC Deep Sea Chronograph is the activation aperture  that sites below 12 o’clock.  This display allows the wearer to know, without a doubt, if the chronograph is running, stopped, or ready to be used.  This is how it works:

Whoa.  We didn’t expect to see this one.

Remember back in 1960 when Rolex accompanied Captain Don Walsh and Jacques Piccard aboard the Bathyscaphe Trieste on the voyage into the Mariana Trench, the deepest point in the world’s ocean?  They did it with the Deep Sea Special.

Now, Rolex has created a second “Deep Sea” watch called the “Deep Sea Challenge,” rated to 40,000 feet.   And, it will accompany director James Cameron when he dives even further into the Mariana trench.  Seriously.

Details here.

Few companies have embraced the “vintage inspired” trend with more enthusiasm (and success) than Jaeger-LeCoultre. JLC has a wonderful horological history and many classic models on which they can draw inspiration for new designs or tributes to past models. With notable examples like the lovely Grande Reverso Ultra Thin Tribute to 1931 and the gorgeous Memovox Tribute to Deep Sea, JLC has a firm grasp on their strengths in both aesthetic watch design and technical innovations. The latest model to join their vintage brigade is the Deep Sea Vintage Chronograph (ref: 207857J) which builds on the success of 2011′s Memovox Tribute to Deep Sea by incorporating a two register chronograph into its vintage diver DNA.

The Deep Sea Vintage Chronograph comes only as pictured (right) sporting a 40.5 mm stainless steel case, plexiglass crystal, and matte black dial with “tropic” colored luminous markers and hands. The lume choice, along with the rest of the styling, is meant to be reminiscent of JLC Deep Sea watches from the late 50s and 60′s. Timekeeping and chronograph duties are managed by the JLC calibre 751G which is an automatic movement with 37 jewels and a 65 hour power reserve. This model is about style and historic brand DNA so it’s not surprising that it lacks any of the haute horology complications that JLC is incorporating into some of their other models seen at SIHH this year (see the JLC Duometre a Spherotourbillon).

The Deep Sea Vintage Chronograph is an excellent design that sports a modern movement and is the result of the strength of the original Deep Sea models as well as the JLC brand. Given the excellent style and JLC’s position as one of the most respected manufactures in the watch world we are quite sure the Deep Sea Vintage Chronograph will be a hit, even with a rumored price point above $ 10, 000.

The guys from Hodinkee.com got to see the Deep Sea Vintage Chronograph in person at SIHH this week, they posted some great photos here.

We showed a quick preview of the Jaeger-LeCoultre Deep Sea Vintage Chronograph last week – now we’ve gotten our hands on it, and are proud to show you these live pictures and impressions.

Here’s the thing: Jaeger-LeCoultre never made a chronograph that looked like this in the 1950s or 60s. So while last year’s tribute to the Deep Sea Alarm was a historical reference revisited (this historical reference), this year’s chrono is really a tribute to a watch that could’ve been (and definitely should’ve been).  Essentially, the Deep Sea Vintage Chrono took the stylings of the DSA and made it a chrono.  Is it historically important like the Polaris and Deep Sea Alarm tributes? Nope. Does it still look awesome? Yup, big time.

In fact, we absolutely loved this watch when we got to play with.  The size is perfect at 40.5mm, the style just incredible, and the JLC caliber 751 chronograph is just rock-solid. Oh, and the best part about this watch? It’s poised to be sold for at or under $ 12,000.  Pretty incredible considering that’s roughly the cost of the Deep Sea Alarm from last year and this has a chronograph.  So, the JLC Deep Sea Vintage Chronograph may be a tribute to something that never existed, but its undeniable wrist prescence, practicality, great looks, and good value trump that many times over.

The gang over at the Purists got an exclusive early preview of a great new watch to be released at SIHH next week.  The Jaeger-LeCoultre Deep Sea Vintage Chronograph is the follow-up to last year’s phenominally successfull Tribute To Deep Sea Alarm.

Taking many design cues from the European DSA, the Deep Sea Vintage is not actually a tribute to any particular watch, simply a vintage styled chronograph in the Deep Sea family.  It will share the same case dimensions as the DSA (41mm) and use JLC’s caliber 751G automatic movement, beating at 28,800 bph.

The JLC Deep Sea Vintage Chronograph will not be a limited edition.  We’ll have more specs and live images from SIHH next week, so stay tuned.

Deep Blue has recently announced a new diver called the “Master Explorer“. This new model, unlike many from Deep Blue, does not feature tritium illumination opting instead for a Super-LumiNova treatment on the indices, hands and bezel scale. Along with what looks to be very powerful lume, the Master Explorer features a 46 x 17 mm stainless steel case fitted with a sapphire crystal and a helium escape valve to match up with its 1000m water resistance. Timekeeping is taken care of by a reliable Miyota 9015 automatic movement which features hacking and hand-winding. The Master Explorer is being sold directly though ShopNBC for a very reasonable $ 338 and can be had with a yellow, orange, red, blue, or black dial. We have yet to see a Deep Blue watch in person but the Master Explorer looks to be excellent value given its capable movement, sapphire crystal and ample use of luminous paint. Luminox Deep Dive 1500 8 Luminox Deep Dive Automatic 1500 Series Watch Review

After several years of development Luminox was finally able to release what I believe to be the brand’s first serious mechanical dive watch. This is a bit ironic as the brand is well-known for their durable timepieces popular with none other than the Navy SEALs. For most of the brand’s existence I think they mostly played with Swiss quartz movements but the last few years has seen a mechanical watch here and there. One of them is this very capable 1500 Series pieces also known as the Deep Dive Automatic.

According to Luminox the watch is IS0 6425 rated. This rating has mostly to do with water resistance, but also is the overall rating that a watch must meet to be considered a serious dive watch. Such ratings were established in order to separate watches that merely look like dive watches and ones that actually are dive watches. In this case the Deep Dive Automatic wants you to know it is a serious diving tool – whether or not you ever intend to submerge with it. For skeptics there is always the engraved diving bell style helmet on the rear of the case.

Luminox Deep Dive 1500 11 Luminox Deep Dive Automatic 1500 Series Watch Review

Even on the natural rubber strap the watch is large and heavy. This piece feels solid and weighty. The tonneau style case makes the 44mm wide size feel larger, but being in PVD black helps visually reduce the mass a bit. Though it is a darn cool looking watch on the wrist. 44mm wide is a bit of a misnomer given the large crown and guard structure. It is funny how 44mm wide can seem to large or small depending on the style of the case.

The prominent bezel in black is marked with silver numerals and markers. The non-white text helps the bezel design not over-power the dial – which Luminox wants to be the main attraction. Here you’ll get your choice of a few colors mixed with a healthy amount of tritium gas tubes for luminant. There is also a tube at the 60 minute mark on the bezel. This particular model is the ref. 1505, being the “bumble bee” version in black and yellow with some white. It is my favorite, but other versions are available.

You’ll find the dial to be particularly bold, as the hour markers are richly filled in with color. The protruding gas tubes as well as the angled flange ring make for a deep looking dial that isn’t flat. Plus, the central part of the dial is recessed just a little bit to follow the hour hand track. Often times on dive watches with different color hour and minute hands the minute hand gets the more “obnoxious” color (such as orange). Here Luminox was clever and make the hour hand yellow with the minute hand being a softer white color. In the dark you can see the minute hand not only because it has double gas tubes but because it is colored blue versus green.

It is a great looking dial that is benefited by careful detailing and an emphasis and strong looks. The case itself integrates very nicely with the rubber strap. One the wrist the thick make case is snug even though it is built to be water resistant to 500 meters. On the side of the case is an automatic helium release valve that has a cosmetic red ring printed around it. Over the dial is a double AR coated sapphire crystal. Luminox designed the strap buckle to be “extra aggressive” with three tongues. According to them this is also meant to remind you of Neptune’s three spiked trident. Little God of the Sea action with this watch. Luminox also includes a strap extension which helps if you want to use it over a diving suit.

Luminox Deep Dive 1500 1 Luminox Deep Dive Automatic 1500 Series Watch Review

The bezel lock doubles as a crown-guard and is a patented system special for this watch. The way it works is simple. When pulled out you can turn the bezel. Otherwise it is locked in. Production delays for this watch stemmed from complexities in making this system work I believe. When released the guard is on the sharper side, but Luminox polished it down a bit compared to early models which were very sharp. I did however notice on my model that over time it loosened a bit to not lock as tightly.

With the watch comes a water-proof Pelican-style case. These cases are always great, but awful if you are trying to clear up space. You simply cannot throw these boxes away! They can be re-purposed for lots of uses and make for a great presentation. What amuses me is that when I opened the box there was a Luminox insert for a special limited edition version of the Deep Dive watch. This was for a different watch than the piece inside the case. It felt like Luminox was trying to advertise a different watch than the new one you just got. That was gave me a chuckle. Inside the Deep Dive Automatic is a Swiss ETA 2826-2 automatic movement. The 2826 is a variant of the popular 2824 movement but with a slightly different date ring (a bit larger in size). It certain feels good to have a mechanical Luminox watch with the same brand DNA as we are used to with the less expensive models. Price for the Deep Dive Automatic 1500 Series pieces is $ 1,900. Steeper than many people expect for watch in the brand, but not at all unreasonable for what you get.
