There are vintage Submariners, and then there are watches like this.  You guys are familiar with the run of the mill mega-Rolexes – the Paul Newmans, the MilSubs, and the COMEX pieces (seen together here), but as we’ve told you before, there exists an even higher level of vintage Rolex collecting.

In this world, you’re not dealing with “a” watch, you’re dealing with “the” watch, as in this world revolves around singular pieces, not vague groupings like “a meters first Submariner”.  Specifically, here we are talking about “the Rolex 6538 Big Crown Submariner with an explorer dial, red depth rating, and officially certified chronometer marking, in spectacular original shape.”

The watch dates to early 1956 and retains all of its original parts, and even original beveling on the case edges.  This is, according to its owner, only the second watch of this configuration to surface, and in certainly the better condition of the two.  Based on the reaction on VRF, we tend to agree that this watch is absolutely something very special.

We do not know how much was paid for this particular example, but based in similar (lesser) Submariners that have sold publicly in the recent year or so, we would put this one at $ 250K+.  Oh, and if you’re curious who sold this watch to its new owner?  It would our old friends Eric Ku (who we interviewed here) and Matthew Bain, who we work with on our GILT sales and pop-ups.

For more info on this spectacular and hyper-rare Rolex Submariner Ref 6538 Big Crown with explorer dial, red depth rating, and OCC markings, click here.

The Crown-Tightenix watch tool from Japan acquired the patent in Switzerland (March 10, 2010) ” The Crown-Tightenix ” is crown tightening & watch winding tool from Japan and acquired the patent in Switzerland in October 2009. “The Crown-Tightenix ” is a watch tool that Mr. Motonobu Ohyabu, President of Yuubido Japan Corporation, a watch retail store in Aichi Prefecture, devised and designed. Mr. Ohyabu had seen often that their customers had difficulty to wind watches and tightening crown, and crowns of some watches were not tightened enough. Moreover he knows that sales representatives had difficulty and hard time to adjust and wind watches. Actually crowns of some ladies models are small and not easy to operate. Since he knows such actual facts very well, he spent 7 years to produce this “The Crown-Tightenix”. He produced “The Crown-Tightenix” with his wishes that owners could use their wrist watches for many years and they could avoid to bear repair expense preventing from water infiltration into movement. By using The Crown-Tightenix, enhance the waterproof screw-in crown watches, avoid clearance gap of winding screw which cause water infiltration into movement and easy self-winding. This is very useful and efficient watch tool for wristwatch owners and watch sales representatives. “The Crown-Tightenx” acquired 2 patents in Japan in 2004 and 2005, and one in the United States in 2004, and also, one in Switzerland in October 2009. Easy to wind watches by using “The

So, if you’ve read HODINKEE with any regularity, you should know that historically, watches designated for the US-market by Jaeger-LeCoultre often bear the solitary “LeCoultre” on the dial instead of “Jaeger-LeCoultre.”  This was the case in the middle part of the last century, not so any more (in spite of the limited edition US Deep Sea Alarm with LeCoultre on the dial).

So, when you stumble across a vintage LeCoultre wristwatch, one thing you want to make sure is that the movement is also signed “LeCoultre” and not “Jaeger-LeCoultre”.  For years dealers were perpetuating the idea that a hodgepodge dial / mvmt signature combo was OK and likely original, though now we tend to believe that is not the case.  If it says JLC on the dial, it should say JLC on the movement.  If it says LeCoultre on the dial, it should say LeCoultre on the movement.

Taking things one step further, many LeCoultre wristwatches came with a special US-only crown that, instead of being signed “JL”, was signed “LeC.”  You rarely see these anymore because, well, if the thing has been serviced once, it is very likely the crown was replaced with a JL signed piece.

An LeC crown isn’t a must have, in fact many LeCoultre watches of the 1950s-70s did in fact come with a “JL” crown, but it is just one more thing to look for when out in the scary world of vintage watch buying.

Question by Mag03

I just recently bought a Rolex for my boyfriend. I was adjusting the date and it said to pull the out to the first notch and then turn clockwise to change the date. When I did that the date did not change so I turned it counterclockwise and the date began to change. When I was reading on the internet about it, some sites said that it would have no affect on the watch and others said it could damamge the movement? did I damage the movement since the date wont change when I turn the crown clockwise? HELP!! this was an expensize watch!

Answer by Linux User
It is unlikely that you damaged anything.

I am a watch collector. I own a Rolex. All of my watches change the date when turned clockwise. The only answer I can think of is you have a fake Rolex.

A few nice rolex watches images I found:

Notice the crown does NOT have the Triplock dots. Prior to the official release of the Triplock, in the early 1970s, the Submariner and Sea-Dweller used a larger crown without three dots (the trademark of the Triplock crown)

Question by Annie B.: How do I screw the crown back on a rolex watch?
Please tell me, I just got the watch and I need to screw back on the crown. I don’t know how. I unscrewed it to set the date and time.

Thanks!

Answer by Sione™
Push it in towards the watch while turning it clockwise and it will start screwing back into the “body” of the watch.
