Are you always searching for that watch that’ll knock you off your feet? Search no more with the Hublot King Power “Knockout” Watches!  Hublot watches have always packed a punch with their innovative use of materials and technology. Now the world-famous brand is producing twelve one-of-a-kind watches for a World Boxing Council (WBC) Charity Auction in September.

Hublot recently announced their partnership with the WBC this past March and are kicking off their new tag team with this line of twelve watches.  Each timepiece will be dedicated to boxing greats of years past including Oscar de la Hoya, Sugar Ray Leonard, Tommy Harns, Lennox Lewis, Mike Tyson, Julio Cesar Chavez, Marvin Hagler, Evander Holyfield, Jeff Fenech, Larry Holmes, George Foreman, and Roberto Duran. Each timepiece honoring a boxer will have the name of the fighter engraved on the back of the case and will include design elements as unique as the boxers themselves.

All the watches will mimic the bright green and red colors of the boxing belts and will use Hublot’ s trademark 18 carat King Gold  (King Gold is made exclusively by Hublot—the recipe is as closely guarded as a champion’s title). The watches will mimic more than the color scheme: the timepiece itself mirrors the fierce competition among equals found in both the boxing world and the realm of watch making.

Just as the boxing world is full of strong competitors and fierce opposition, the watch-making world features its own head-to-head contests of durability, innovative technology, and the urge to go the distance.

It’s no coincidence that Hublot has picked its partner and its latest inspiration in the world of boxing. Both the sport and the art have long, rich histories spanning hundreds of years.  The persistence, diligence, and need to go the extra mile cement the duo between the two disciplines. Hublot is a newcomer to the field of top notch watches, but their bold moves have already landed them among the top of their competition, and their latest alliance with the WBC proves that they are in it to win it.

The auction will take place in September 2012 at Las Vegas. The watches will be presented to their new owners by the boxers that inspired the design, so those who wish to own one of these one-of-a-kind pieces had better come prepared to fight for them: who knows what kind of pro you’ll have to fight to get them!

Highlights from my trip to Phoenix Arizona (from my perspective). It goes without saying that I had an absolute blast, and I am certain to return if the organizers (AoA and Phoenix Airgun) take it upon themselves to put on this show again. I would have liked to mention everyone by name – especially the guys who put in tireless hours to make this event happen. But, in the end, I decided that discretion is best, so I kept everyone’s identity to first names only. There was also a MASSIVE raffle. I bought a mess of tickets, but I didn’t win anything. I remember Marauder and Sumatra air rifles – a Shoebox Compressor – guns cases – shooting mats – gear bags – tank covers – and a ton of other great stuff. Unfortunately, I didn’t film any of that raffle drawing because my camera battery died, and I was shoveling Pizza in my face (like everyone else – except maybe Luiz). :) The one thing I do remember is a young man winning a Sumatra .22 AND the Shoebox compressor (and maybe a tank, too). We were all smiling at his good fortune. I managed to capture one photo of him and his mother (and Luiz) accepting the gun. It is towards the end of the video. Huge Thank You to the boys at AoA and Phoenix Airgun for all the late nights they spent putting together that incredible day, as well as the cornucopia of prizes donated by the sponsors. ted. So here are the links I promised at the end of the video. Organizers and Sponsors: Airguns of Arizona: www.airgunsofarizona.com Phoenix Airgun

TimeZone’s 2011 Watch of the Year competition has started and there are six candidates you can choose from when voting. Go to the TimeZone website and leave your vote for your favorite watch manufacturer. Make sure you are a registered user of TimeZone and read the voting policy before doing so.

The candidates of the 2011 edition of TimeZone’s Watch of the Year are:

A. Lange & Sohne’s Richard Lange Tourbillon Pour le Mérite. Limited to 100 pieces only in platinum (model shown here in 18 carat red gold) and the fourth piece from this Glashuette manufacture with the Pour le Mérite distinction. The tourbillon with a patented stop-seconds mechanism and the fusée-and-chain transmission have been developed and implemented in this Richard Lange timepiece to improve rate stability and the accuracy of the movement. We’ve done a few A. Lange & Sohne articles at Fratellowatches in the past year, the most viewed one being Ming Thein’s Datograph Diary.

Baume & Mercier’s Hampton Automatic Chronograph. We’ve a lot of respect for the brand that was able to re-do their entire image and branding in such a short time. Completely in the style of the Hampton’s, where the rich and famous hang out in the weekends, Baume & Mercier is a brand again that is back on the horological map. Not only by collectors, but also by the people that only buy one good watch in their entire life. To celebrate a special occasion like graduation, promotion, marriage or just because they make beautiful chronographs. This Hampton Automatic Chronograph with its rectangular case (measuring 34 x 47 mm) is in our opinion competing in this 2011 Watch of the Year with the other rectangular watch, the Jaeger-LeCoultre Rerverso. A manufacture hand wound caliber with a power reserve of 65 hours keep this watch alive.

Gronefeld’s One Hertz. We’ve written a lot about this Dutch brand here, and about the One Hertz in particular (click here). The complication of this beautiful watch is the independent dead seconds hand (secondes mortes). Gronefeld’s in-house developed movement is wonderfully crafted and uses a terrific easy to operate time-setting and winding system. Just by pushing the crown you’ll operate the watch, the small indicator in the dial demonstrates whether it is in winding or setting mode. The One Hertz is unique in the sense that the dead seconds are being powered by a secondary gear train that is completely independent from the hour and minute indications gear train. Available in gold and stainless steel.

Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Grande Reverso Ultra Thin “Tribute to 1931”. 2011 was the 80th anniversary of the Reverso and JLC celebrated that with this Tribute to 1931. The ultra-thin rectangular timepiece has become the SIHH 2011 favorite of many collectors and watch aficionados out there. Understandable, since this watch is such an icon of time. Everybody knows the Reverso, even when there is not much interest in watches at all. We’ve covered Jaeger-LeCoultre quite a lot last year and have shown our love for this classic brand over and over again, based on the positive reactions on these articles and the views it generated, we think this watch could be the winner of the competition. This manual wind (caliber 822) time piece is available in gold and stainless steel.

Patek Philippe’s Perpetual Calendar Chronograph Reference 5270. This particular chronograph has been in our Top 5 of Basel 2011 time pieces (click here). From the moment we saw it during our appointment with Patek Philippe in BaselWorld, we were impressed with it. This entirely in-house designed and crafted chronograph caliber does not only feature a chronograph, it is also a – as the name implied already – a perpetual calendar showing the day and month in two apertures at 12 o’clock. At 6 o’clock, the dial shows the date and moon phase. Of course, this PP has the PP Seal engraved in the movement and consists of over 450 parts in total (182 only for the perpetual calendar). With its diameter of 41mm, it is very wearable.

Vacheron Constantin’s Patrimony Traditionnelle World Time. We’ve done an article in the past about our top 3 of World Timers, and this Vacheron Constantin wasn’t in there. This was of course, before this timepiece had been introduced in 2011. This World Time watch enables simultaneous reading of all 37 world time zones, using three different dials. 1. A sapphire dial with inked and engraved 24-hour indications and central graded day/night indication; 2. A metal dial with map and transferred city names; 3. A metal minute-circle ring and gold applied indexes. By picking a reference location and turning it toward a black triangle at 6 o’clock, the requested time zone can be read by the hour hand or by the 24-hour indicator while the other 36 time zones can be read simultaneously, as well. All settings are created by using the crown. Vacheron Constatin filed a patent for this caliber 2460WT movement.

Here at Fratellowatches we’ve shown a lot of love for some of the brands in this list during the last year. Since we’ve gotten our hands on the Gronefeld One Hertz (Ming Thein did an excellent review, click here), handled it during introduction in BaselWorld 2011 and fiddled around with it during our photo shoot for AskMen at the Gronefeld manufacture in The Netherlands (click here), we are very enthusiastic about this watch and Gronefeld in general. We are pretty sure that we can see a lot more interesting horological stuff coming up from the Dutch bros. The One Hertz is a timepiece that should and would make a perfect ‘TimeZone Watch of the Year 2011′ watch.

Whatever watch you’ll pick as a winner, make sure to do this before noon (GMT) on the 27th of February 2012. Vote by only stating the name of the company, not the watch model. Click here to enter the voting of 2011 TimeZone’s Watch of the Year!

Raymond Weil, following suit as one of the few Swiss luxury watch brands that remains independently owned, did something quite unconventional this year—appropriately in line with the “indie” persuasion, the watchmaking company held an international photography competition for its fans, allowing anyone and everyone to enter, as well as vote for, photographs of their liking. The platform of the competition, Facebook, confirmed the relevance, and, in fact, necessity, of social media to promote brand awareness in any industry.

Holding a worldwide competition was easy to achieve using a global social networking website as a contest “location,” requiring only that contestants and voters “like” the Raymond Weil fan page on Facebook in order to participate. Though the International Grand Prize, awarded to Mathieu Bernard-Reymond for his stoic piece titled “Crude Oil Prices,” was selected by the International Jury (representatives of Raymond Weil), the contest also included three Public’s Choice Awards, voted on by Facebook fans. The competition divided international fans into three different regions: Europe & Africa, Asia, and the Americas. The three public winners, one from each region, were Silvia Pogoda, with 117 votes, Yuan Weifa, with 47 votes, and Omar Gamez, with 36 votes, respectively. All three winners’ claim to fame is owed to fellow Raymond Weil Facebook fans.

As stated in the official announcement, the winning picture was chosen due its effort “to put into question the solidity and permanence of our relationship to economics, landscape and history.” One might say the photograph corresponds with the watchmaker’s image of sleek beauty and purity. The company’s watches, after all, use nothing but the purest ingredients, ranging from stainless steel to 18 karat gold. Unfortunately, the photo has thus far inspired much less flattering remarks than Raymond Weil watches from Facebook fans, but it hangs proudly still on the website wall as 2011’s international winner. Congratulations, Mathieu!

Any blogger or social networker knows that the digital world never stops spinning, and Raymond Weil isn’t following far behind. Since the announcement of the photography competition winners, another contest has already been announced—the Valentine’s Day Contest, held not by Raymond Weil but by Unicorn Jewelry & Watch Boutique, a designer bridal store that the watchmaker “likes.” In this new contest, which began on Jan. 15 and will accept submissions and votes until February 12, 2012, fans are called on to submit love letters of a three-sentence minimum. The winners will be those who attract the most “likes” for their submissions, and the three prizes offered will be gift certificates of $ 250, $ 150, and $ 100.

These awards include a prize of $ 1,500, exhibition in a Raymond Weil boutique and continued support of and communication with the winning artist by Raymond Weil.

The jury for the International Photography Prize includes: Annette Booth, of the Aperture Gallery, New York; Radu Stern, of the Musée de l’Elysée, Lausanne, Switzerland; Xie Mo, professional photographer and Elie Bernheim, Director of Raymond Weil.

Raymond Weil has always been an enthusiastic patron of the arts, and through its continued collaboration with The Aperture Gallery, has helped to expose the talents of numerous young photographers to the international art scene. According to the Aperture Gallery blog; “We believe an arts patron has a responsibility to provide young talent with meaningful support at the right moment, and the [Raymond Weil] Club young talent discovery program does just that.”

Additionally, Raymond Weil has sponsored music competitions and has partnered with VH1’s Save the Music Foundation, for the purpose of restoring music programs to American Public Schools. In service of that goal, Raymond Weil launched a Facebook application that will help to raise the profile of the foundation as well as gather funds for the organization. For every fan that uses the app and clicks the “Donate Now” button, Raymond Weil will donate $ 1 to Save The Music Foundation.

The International Photography Competition finalists’ entries are now posted on Raymond Weil’s Facebook page. Fans of Raymond Weil will be able to vote for their favorite entrant until January 17, 2012, 11:00 GMT. For each of the three regions, the photographer who wins the most votes will receive the Public’s Choice Award. The jury will announce the winner on January 18th 2012.
