Seiko Watches introduced a limited edition Sportura Chronograph to celebrate their three-year partnership with internationally successful Futbol Club Barcelona who visited Seiko in Tokyo following their FIFA Club Cup win.

On Dec. 18, 2011, Seiko partners Futbol Club Barcelona won the FIFA Club World Cup in Yokohama, Japan, beating out Brazilian Santos Futebol Clube to become world champions for the second time since 2009. The powerful Catalonian football club is among the most successful in the world, becoming the first team to win six out of six competitions in 2009. Supporter owned and operated, Barcelona’s motto “Més que un club” (“More than a club”) exemplifies their commitment to excellence and community, making them an ideal partner for Seiko Watches. FC Barcelona began its relationship with Japanese fine watch designer Seiko in March 2011. President and CEO of Seiko Watch Corporation Shinji Hattori commented on the partnership, “The history, culture and ambition of the Club are a perfect match with Seiko, and we look forward to a successful cooperation in the coming years.”

During their stay in Japan, FC Barcelona visited the new Seiko Salon at the Wako store in the Ginza district of Tokyo. FC Barcelona President Sandro Rosell presented Hattori with a Barcelona jersey with his name on it as a symbol of the strength of the two companies’ partnership. In the creative spirit of Seiko Watches, 11 FC Barcelona players helped design a unique wall clock. Each player signed his name next to his respective number on the clock to create a one-of-a-kind timepiece using the best elements of Seiko design and technology. The clock can be seen on display at the Seiko Museum Ginza Exhibition in Tokyo.

FCB’s December visit to Tokyo followed on the heels of Seiko’s visit to Barcelona in September 2011, their first meeting with the team since becoming the champion Club’s official timekeeper in March. Vice President of Seiko Watch Corporation Mr. Takahashi presented the players and coaches of the FC Barcelona first team with limited edition Sportura FC Barcelona Chronograph watches. The new chronographs feature Seiko’s trademark quality craftsmanship and the Barcelona team crest and colors. Worn by Golden Ball winner Lionel Messi and Silver Ball winner Xavi Hernandez, the FC Barcelona Chronographs appeal to both fans of the world champion football club and lovers of fine special edition Seiko watches. The oldest Automobile club in the world is opening it s doors to the Swiss watchmaking company Hublot for the first partnership in it s history . Hugues de Rouret and Jean-Claude Biver are explaining the reasons which encouraged them to join forces in Paris today . IWC recently announced a new version of their Portuguese Yacht Club Chronograph watch that came out about two years ago. The great looking piece is probably one of my top pics from the brand at this time and now is featured in an even more sporty skin. This version is done in collection with the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-2012. Beyond that I guess a new watch will be made?

The rear of the watch has “Volvo Ocean Race 2011-2012″ engraved on the back. IWC is the officially timekeeper for the boat race events. In the race IWC is also the official sponsor of the Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing Team. Interesting that they sponsor the event and one of the teams.

The titanium case and carbon fiber dial look good together and feel fitting with the high-end racing boats. These performance machines operate thanks to very capable sailors and seconds count when needed to start the race. While not a traditional regatta timer, the first 10 minutes of the chronograph counter are specially colored to help with calculating how much time before the race starts.

Interestingly enough the Volvo Ocean Race is an around-the-world race. I am not sure exactly how that works out, but it is a pretty grueling event for the sailors (best to have a nice watch). Though of course the majority of these watches will go on the wrists of non-sailors who admire their work. The watch case is 45.4mm wide and here in titanium. It has a sapphire crystal and is water resistant to 60 meters.

Through the rear of the watch you can see the very pretty in-house made IWC caliber 89361 automatic movement. There are two hands in the upper chronograph register, which allows this to be a full 12 hour chronograph, but enjoy the good look of only two subdials. The movement has a power reserve of almost three days. The watch comes attached to a black rubber strap (love that strong looking clasp).

IWC makes it clear that this is a limited production watch as it is for the 2011-2012 Volvo Ocean Race. Though they don’t indicate how many pieces exactly will be made. Reference number for this IWC Portuguese Yacht  Club Chronograph Edition “Volvo Ocean Race 2011-2012″ watch is IW390212. Look for it soon. Price is $ 15,800.
