Want to know just how the the very first atomic clock (built by the UK’s National Physical Laboratory in 1955!) worked? We thought so. Above is a super vintage-y, almost downright campy video explaining just that. Enjoy.

Antelope Audio has launched a new preamplifier that incorporates a 10M Rubidium atomic clock. This device, which is the world’s first atomic digital preamplifier, is significantly more stable than traditional crystal oscillator. The built-in atomic clock stabilizes this Rubicon preamp and reduces jitter, which is often a problem in most modern DACs (digital to analog converts). This, in turn, improves the sound quality of the device for the listener.

Rubicon is the first DAC to integrate a Rubidium atomic clock. As the name suggests, DAC converts digital audio into an electrical signal that we can listen to. As mentioned above, what makes this device special is the use of rubidium clock as part of its digital to analog and analog to digital conversion. The clock keeps the information coming in to be converted in precise order. This makes this DAC not only stable but also capable of handling huge amount of data at one time.
The Rubicon is also compatible with DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance). DLNA streaming capability, in addition to the 384 kHz USB streaming, allows users to wirelessly stream any media from PC, smartphone, or Network-attached storage server to this device and listen to it with the DAC. This device also has high sample rate A/D conversion. These features will allow for high resolution audio and keep the depth, richness, and warmth of the original analog and digital recordings.

The Rubicon features:
· A 10M Rubidium Atomic Clock, which is 100,000 times more stable and accurate than a traditional crystal oscillator
· 64-bit Acoustically Focused Clocking technology, which allows for jitter management and noise management
· 384kHz A/D & D/A converters for high resolution audio
· DLNA streaming capabilities through an Ethernet interface from smarthphone, PC, or NAS server
· Transformer-based, ultra-low noise, discrete JFET phono preamp
· Gold-plated stepped relay volume attenuator matched to 0.05dB for all volume levels
· Ultra-linear, dual stage headphone amps
· De-jittered audio S/PDIF output
· A/D circuit comes from the 2011 winner of the Audio Media Gear of the Year award
· Custom USB 2.0 chip streaming up to 480 Mbits/384kHz with recording option

This device has a beautiful exterior with a vintage look. It comes in a strong machined aluminum frame and gold-plated relay volume control and dual stage headphone drivers. Antelope Audio will present the Rubicon for the first time to the public and the media during the Munich High End Show, which is scheduled to go from May 3 – 6, 2012.

While we tend to focus mainly on wristwatches at HODINKEE, the fact of the matter is, we love well-designed timepieces of all kinds. Ben has a great Max Bill wall clock, Blake likes his pocketwatches and I’ve got an old Braun alarm clock ticking on my nightstand. We especially like when timepieces and good causes come together. So the Punkt AC 01 Limited Edition alarm clock is a timepiece we can get behind.
Designed by British designer, Jasper Morrison of the Switzerland-based Punkt Group, the AC 01 is a refreshing alternative to the “mobile-phone-as-alarm-clock.” It is a bewitchingly simple clock that fully realizes the form follows function aesthetic. Design is spare, controls are simple, ergonomic and intuitive, with luminous hands, a backlight and alarm with snooze function. But the clock’s simplicity belies the gravity of its purpose.
Powered by a Seiko quartz movement, the AC 01 has an obvious connection to Japan and was, in fact, released only a month after the tsunami that devastated the coastline of that country, killing and displacing thousands of people. Punkt has created the Limited Edition AC 01, with a red dial and white case, to resemble the Japanese flag and is donating all proceeds from its sale to help rebuild the coastal fishing village of Maeami. The 500 individually-numbered AC 01 clocks are for sale at select stores worldwide, some with online shopping options, for $ 246.00. That odd number was chosen to commemorate the exact time the tsunami struck – 2:46am local time on March 11th, 2011. Get more information here.
