Harry Winston Premier Feather Shanghai Harry Winston Shanghai Pavilion Watches For China

I normally don’t cover boutique openings (so I am not likely going to start now) but in conjunction with the opening of their new Shanghai Pavilion boutique, Harry Winston released not one but five new limited edition models. None of these are novel per se mechanically -but offer some very beautiful interpretations of things we have seen from the brand as of late.

This year Harry Winston released their new Premier Feather collection of watches that showcased a unique form of real feather marquetry on the dial. Craftsperson Nelly Saunier delicately produces each dial by hand (about seven hours each) using hand-picked feathers. Some bird’s nakedness is your gain with these Harry Winston Premier Feather Limited Edition Shanghai watches that feature stunning red and black feathers. These pieces come in a 36mm wide case lined with diamonds and will be limited to just eight pieces.

Ladies win in this round having three limited edition models, but men get something as well (two pieces). For the Shanghai Plaza opening, Harry Winston offers two limited edition versions (again of eight pieces each – surprise surprise China) of the Midnight Tourbillon watch. One is the more basic Midnight Tourbillon model and the other is the Midnight Tourbillon GMT. The touches of lucky color red and the emanating figure eight symbol on the Midnight Tourbillon really round-out the theme.

Each of these Midnight Limited Edition Shanghai watches comes in a 45mm wide, 18k white gold case with a black alligator strap. Again, these are more or less existing models with cosmetic changes for these limited edition pieces. Each watch shares the same base movement which is an automatic with a 110 hour power reserve. The tourbillon of course is visible on the dial. The GMT has two time displays and a city indicator for the local time. The standard model has just the time with a power reserve indicator on the dial. Both are quite elegant in 18k white gold and black with the hints of red.

The last two models are in the Harry Winston Midnight Limited Edition Shanghai ladies collection. Here the appeal is in the dial designs. Each of these two models draw inspiration from a traditional Shanghai (and Chinese) residential architectural structure called a Shikumen. These buildings are highly coveted in modern Shanghai and are kept intact as much as possible by the local people. The design of the dials on these two watch mirror elements of the structure’s overall layout, as well as aesthetic elements found in many of them.

The smaller model comes in a 32mm wide 18k rose case and has diamond lined arches and Arabesque motifs on the dial. Attached to the case is a white satin strap. The other model is larger at 39mm wide in an 18k white gold case matched to a black alligator strap (I guess it could also be a men’s model for some dudes). For me, this is the more stunning version as the dial showcases a more aerial view of the Skikumen layout done in deep green jade and onyx – again with diamonds as well. I believe these two Harry Winston Midnight Limited Edition Shanghai ladies pieces contain quartz movements and are also limited to eight pieces each. If you are interested – then head to Shanghai, China.

Hublot Big Bang Jet Li Hublot Watches + Jet Li + China

In a recent interview with Hublot’s CEO Jean Claude Biver he mentioned to me how Hubot will put a lot of focus into Asia (namely China) in 2012. Boy, he wasn’t kidding – and I expect a full of series of spectacle style events to ensue in the next few years that only Hublot knows how to put on. Hublot hasn’t ignored China up to know. Starting in 2010 they chose martial arts actor Jet Li as a brand ambassador, and have had other events in the region.

When Hublot puts their sights on something they do aim and fire with the biggest bullet they have. While I doubt they will reach the popularity of Omega in China (which is a totally different kind of brand), Hublot will likely be able to replicate the modern style and fun wearing experience that Hublot has a reputation for in Europe and the United States (among other places as well). From all that I hear China is a very tough market to crack. Many Chinese consumers are interested in fashion and status symbols, as well as wearing and owning “the best.” With superlative items being those that speak the loudest to them in terms of wealth and success.

As they have done in other countries, Hublot will connect with popular people and events in the Chinese market to attract media attention and give watch buyers things to talk about aside from mere product. The Jet Li connection as well as the limited edition watch for him is a good example.

I recall as a kid watching Lethal Weapon 4. It was probably the first time that I saw Jet Li in a movie. There was a fight season between him and Mel Gibson – and he was kicking Mel’s ass. That was one of the best fight scenes of its era and Jet Li was burned in my mind as a much more bad-ass fighter than Jackie Chan. Chan (who works with some other brands such as IWC and Richard Mille) was more the sweet-faced good guy, when Li could be as mean and foreboding looking as he liked. Though in real life I understand he is a pretty nice guy and does some serious philanthropy work.

One of the first indicators of how Hublot approaches the Chinese market is with their logo. See how they added Chinese characters to it? I’ve not yet seen another brand do that, and I think it makes the brand more personable in the market. Is this the right approach for all brands? No. Other brands benefit from being distinctly European and exclusive. Chinese buyers pride themselves on actually going to Switzerland to buy watches and then bringing them home. Anything Chinese about those products would ruin the experience. So it really depends on how a brand wants to be perceived in a market.

The Hublot Big Bang Jet Li watch will be 44mm wide in black ceramic and limited to 200 pieces. The dial has the motif of traditional Chinese screen work – which I think is a clever touch. It is actually a variation on the Aero Bang skeletonized watch dial look. The black and red tones makes for a nice look that while not unique, are pleasant and fitting to be worn. It also has the appearance of a cool looking villain watch! Inside the watch is an HUB4214 automatic chronograph movement.

Hublot likely opted fro a Big Bang cases because many Asian consumer’s don’t yet prefer larger sized watches. The King Power case is usually 48mm wide and can appear beastly on small wrists. Even at 44m wide the Big Bang case style looks good on most wrists. On the back of the watch is said to be a nice looking Yin-Yang motif applied to the sapphire crystal and Jet Li’s signature.

To launch the watch Hublot threw some crazy Tai Chi related event. Even the performers had Hublot logos on them. Hublot martial art warriors are coming to invade. What a message! Hublot got a huge space and put down a super-sized Yin-Yang on the floor. Jet Li was there and it must have been a blast. I can imagine onlookers walking buy eagerly interested in what was going on. Even if they didn’t know what Hublot was,  there were probably inclined to find out.

Question by arthemysis

I am going to China in a few weeks. I have been there and I know that to buy fake high quality brands Beijing is a good place but higher price than Shenzhen, close to Hong Kong.
But I am wondering where is the place in China that high quality and price are the best for fake goods as bags, watches, etc?

Best answer:

Answer by BSherman
Bringing a few counterfeit goods home from an overseas trip is rarely a problem. In fact, Customs officers generally expect it, but will only tolerate it to a certain level.

If you return home with suitcases full of counterfeit goods, then you will be challenged by Customs. Remember that counterfeit goods may be seized by Customs officers in China or your home country. You may also be fined or arrested for possession of counterfeit goods, especially in large quantities.

I’m going on holidays to China and want to know if branded wallets, handbags, sunglasses, watches… are cheaper there than what we can get in the US and Canada?

I know Hong Kong is very expensive, but I’m also going to Beijing, Changsha, Shenzen, and other tier 1 and 2 cities.

Is it worth it getting Louis Vuitton bags or Chanel glasses there, or is it cheaper at the duty free at the airport?

Thank you!

Best answer:

Answer by l s
Actually the luxury goods are more expensive in China, as they are levied with high custom fees and some taxes when they are imported. It should be cheaper at the duty free
