We’ve seen a lot of dial colors for dive watches – yellow, orange, blue, white and, of course, black. But, you rarely see green dive watches.  Sure, Rolex does it, but anybody else?

Girard-Perregaux has released a special edition of its Sea Hawk 1000 to be auctioned for the benefit of the environment. And while green is not a color known for its underwater visibility, that’s not necessarily the point of this one. According to GP, Green Auction is “a borderless collaboration of individuals, organizations and businesses engaged in spirit and action, in the protection and conservation of the environment.” Sounds like a worthy cause.

Other than its verdant dial and special name, the “Sea Hawk 1000 Green Auction” is identical to the Sea Hawk we took diving with impressive results two years ago. It houses the 27-jewel in-house Girard-Perregaux calibre GP033R0 with power reserve complication, inside a 44mm case with rubber-coated dive bezel. The watch comes on the excellent rubber strap with adjustable deployant clasp.

The Sea Hawk 1000 Green Auction will be open for bidding from March 29th through April 19th and you can see more information and place your bid here.

NBA superstar and Audemars Piguet ambassador LeBron James, singer Celine Dion and Audemars Piguet CEO Francois-Henry Bennahmias at the Miami charity auction for the Baptist Cardiac and Vascular Institute

Miami Heat forward and two-time NBA MVP LeBron James joined Celine Dion and Audemars Piguet CEO Francois-Henry Bennahmias at an event to aid the Baptist Cardiac and Vascular Institute. Audemars Piguet became Official Timekeeper for Baptist Hospital in March of 2011, in recognition of the storied watchmaker’s five year partnership with the Baptist Hospital Foundation, which is the humanitarian branch of the Baptist Hospital.

The evening began with a concert given by Dion, which was a gift from the singer in honor of the hospital’s work in saving the life of her husband Rene Angelil. The concert was followed by an auction of a Jules Audemars Chronograph Tourbillon watch. LeBron James, who was named Audemars Piguet global ambassador in April 2011, went on to auction two of his floor seats to a Miami Heat vs. Celtics game. The auction of the luxury items netted nearly $ 500,000 towards the planned expansion of Miami’s Baptist Cardiac and Vascular Institute.

The Jules Audemars Chronograph Tourbillon is a 43mm timepiece with manually wound 2889 caliber movement with 70 hour power reserve. The case back is translucent sapphire, and the piece contains 335 parts, 286 of which are hand-finished.

The Baptist Cardiac and Vascular Institute founder and medical director Dr. Barry Katzen, who had been working on non-invasive arterial procedures, lead the medical team that treated Angelil in 2009. Because Angelil was not a candidate for surgery, his team of doctors investigated alternative approaches. “They had heard about [Dr. Katzen’s] work with non-invasive treatments,” Angelil said. “They basically told me he was the best person to take care of me.” The expansion of the institute will include a Center for Advanced Endovascular and Structural Heart Therapy and a national Center for Aneurysm Therapy, in addition to other specialized treatment centers. The concert and the auction, which took place at The Fillmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason Theater, raised $ 6 million for the expansion. Said Audemars Piguet CEO Francois-Henry Bennahmias, “We have developed significant relationships in South Florida and as our way of saying thank you are honored to support the work of Baptist Hospital, which does so much good in this community.”

Brand ambassador LeBron James will collaborate with Audemars Piguet on a planned limited edition timepiece in recognition of their partnership. A portion of the proceeds from future auctions of the watch will go to the LeBron James Family Foundation, a charity founded for the purpose of creating initiatives to strengthen the cultural and economic foundations of single-parent households. Says Bennahmias,“We have a history of partnering with those at the top of their game and right now, LeBron is like a comet. Not only does he burn up the court, but he maintains the right balance of family, philanthropy and fame.”

After 35 years and worldwide expansion with his luxury watch line Raymond Weil is taking his passion for music to a different level by creating a charity and partnership that will support the VH1 Save The Music Foundation.

Although applauded by many, it was not a big surprise when earlier this year Raymond Weil announced he was launching a charity that would directly support the ‘VH1 Save The Music Foundation.’ VH1 with it’s continued quest to restore music enrichment programs that allow children to pursue an education augmented by the benefits of musical instruction, along with Raymond Weil’s internationally renowned support of the arts and presence in music, makes this the perfect partnership. The Director of Global Marketing and grandson of Raymond Weil, Elie Bernheim, said “Music has always been at the heart of my family, and we are proud to support an organization that selflessly devotes its resources to ensure that music education continues.”

Raymond Weil and Bernheim family members

Raymond Weil will be in Los Angeles September 22nd 2011, to support the VH1 ‘Save The Music Foundation’ by launching a sales promotion with a portion of the proceeds going to the organization. VH1 will co-host the event with a cocktail reception and has invited Grammy Award Winner Colbie Caillat to perform some of her hit songs. Raymond Weil also launched a new app on the company ‘Facebook’ page that allows the user to contribute by pressing the “Donate Now” tab. He pledged to personally add $ 1 for every donation that is made this way until the initial goal of 30k is reached.

Nabucco Inverso Chronograph

It is easy to see the musical influence that is responsible for Raymond Weil timepieces. His newest creation in 2011 the “Nabucco Inverso” that pays homage to Giuseppe Verdi’s famous opera, is an elegant chronograph that impresses with design and sophistication. It is a 46mm chronograph that houses an automatic winding, 46 hour power reserve, in a sanded titanium and steel polished case. It sports 27 rubies and is water resistant to 20 atmospheres. Although designing this chronograph with other notable attributes the ingenious replacement of the 12 with a Roman numeral counterpart conveys a grandeur rarely seen in any timepiece.

Since creating his own ‘brand’ in 1976 Raymond Weil has been on a steady march around the world, which he attributes to keeping the company a family affair. A feat that stands unique in a market of competitors mostly owned by corporations.
