Blancpain premiered its world-exclusive Traditional Chinese Calendar wristwatch at Baselworld 2012, marking an astonishing feat in the haute horlogerie industry. Blancpains’ Traditional Chinese Calendar mechanical wristwatch honors an age-old cultural calendar still in use by many Chinese lunisolar traditionalists to date.

The scientific technology Blancpain implemented to manufacture this watch involved fundamentals well over a thousand years old and richly ingrained in Chinese cultural tradition. The Traditional Chinese Calendar watch uses a lunisolar calendar, which is a solar calendar with the lunar cycle (29.53059 days) as its base unit, with 12 lunar months totaling 354 days shy of 11 days for a year, which was resolved by adding a leap month for a 13 month year. This is in contrast to that of the Gregorian solar calendar which uses a solar day base unit, having long days in summer and short days in winter, which averages about 365.2425 days a year.

Aesthetics of this dynamic timepiece includes its appealing dial which displays minutes, hours and the Gregorian calendar synergized with the Chinese calendar indicators: dual-hour indicator, day, month with indication of leap months, 12 animal zodiac signs and the five elements as well as the 10 celestial stems. The 12 zodiac animals combined with the five elements and the 10 celestial stems that represent the terrestrial branches follows the 60-year cycle essential to Chinese culture. Another key element of this timepiece is the moon phases, given its correlation to the lunar cycle and traditional Chinese months.

It has a counter at 12 o’clock indicating dual-hour numerals and symbols for a full 24 hour cycle; displayed at 3 o’clock are the elements and the celestial stems representative of a 10-year cycle; the month of the Chinese calendar (12-month cycle), its 30-day cycle – date and the leap month indicator is at 9 o’clock, with moon phases window at 6 o’clock.

The Traditional Chinese Calendar timepiece is powered by a new self-winding Calibre 3638 movement with a 7-day power reserve, consisting of 434 parts and 39 jewels. It has a 45 mm diameter platinum case and sapphire case-back with a beautifully engraved dragon to celebrate year 2012. The crown is a Madagascar ruby cabochon with five integrated under lug correctors for indicator adjustments and it showcases signature features of the Villeret collection.

The white gold version of the watch is available in a 20-piece limited edition; however, an unlimited rose gold version is also available.

Blancpains’ painstaking efforts of its symbolic Traditional Chinese Calendar timepiece certainly warrants acknowledgement for such an outstanding horological achievement. Blancpain has set an impressive milestone leaving other watch manufacturers running towards an enviable far reaching task.

Haute horology and haute cuisine have much in common – beyond the obvious need for impeccable timing. Both require a refined focus on presentation, nuance, innovation, surprise, technical mastery and, of course, taste. So it should come as no surprise that Swiss watchmaster Blancpain was invited to join the selection panel charged with choosing the Swiss culinary representative to compete in the prestigious Bocuse d’Or European contest this March.

Blancpain at Bocuse d'Or Suisse - February 6, 2012

Blancpain at Bocuse d'Or Suisse – February 6, 2012

Conceived in 1985 following the second Sirha – an international catering, hotel and food trade fair held every other year in Lyon, France originally known as the “Salon des Métiers de Bouche – by famed chef Paul Bocuse and director of the event venue Albert Romain, the Bocuse d’Or competition has been held in conjunction with the international event ever since.
With the intention of staging a live competition in front of an audience (something the trade fair, or Bravo television network, had yet to do) as a way to wrap up the well-attended event, Bocuse dreamed of “a row of kitchen booths, we’ll have young chefs from all over the world and a jury composed of international gastronomy stars will taste and mark the performances.” He contacted friends and colleagues from around the world and it was decided that each country would select one candidate to compete. The chef in charge of the national selection process would then become a judge for the international event.
The first Bocuse d’Or took place in 1987. Twenty countries participated and Joël Robuchon presided over a jury that consisted of some of the best chefs in the world: Jean Banchet, Albert Schnell, Heinz Winckler and Masakichi Ono, among others. The first trophy went to Jacky Freon of France.
In 2007, in an attempt to foster even more international participation, the Bocuse d’Or competition announced that it would begin holding continental competitions. Victorious chefs would then participate in the international Bocuse d’Or held at Sirha. This year, the Bocuse d’Or Europe will take place as part of Horeca Life during Brusselicious, the 2012 Year of Gastronomy on March 20 ad 21. Twenty participating countries have been announced and the top twelve places will qualify for the final competition in 2013.
On February 6, Switzerland chose its competitor, with the help of Blancpain. The 17-person Swiss jury was chaired by Frank Giovannini and included such culinary greats as Philippe Rochat, Freddy Giradet and Roland Pierroz. The winner, Teo Chiaravalloti, a sous chef from the Hotel Villa Principe Leopoldo in Lugano, won a Blancpain Fifty Fathoms watch – perfect for standing up to the gauntlet of the gastronomical profession – as well as the chance to compete in one of the world’s most prestigious culinary competitions.

Other parts of the world have already selected their global competitors: the US will be sending Chef Richard Rosendale of The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia; Latin America will be sending Chef Marcos Jose Saenz Gonzales from Guatemala, Chef Fabio Enrique Watanbe from Brazil and Chef Hugo Cesar Ahumada Dominguez from Mexico.
The Bocuse d’Or Finals will take place in Lyon next year on January 29 and 30.

Blancpain Tourbillion Grande Date Watch Face

Face of the Blancpain L-evolution Tourbillion Grande Date

Blancpain reveals the newest edition to their stellar collection of watches, the L-evolution Tourbillion Grande Date Réserve de Marche sur Masse Oscillante.

The latest edition in the L-evolution collection by Blancpain, the Tourbillion Grande Data offers a new feature to the line. The Grande Date will feature a power reserve indicator not on the dial as normally the case in luxury watches, but on a subdial that will be displayed opposite the face of the watch. This allows for more room on the dial, which will allow for more functionality or simply for the dial to be more pleasing to the eye.

This breakthrough in luxury watches lets the owner know whether or not the watch needs to be wound at the most crucial times; before it is put on and after it is taken off. The power reserve is often on the main dial because it needs to be attached to two components near the main dial to know how much life is left in the main spring. What Blancpain has done is put the power reserve indicator on an oscillating weight, which makes it interdependent from the rest of the watch. Therefore, the power reserve dial can be displayed on the bottom of the dial rather than taking up space on the face of the dial.

The watch also comes with a seven day reserve of power before it needs to be wound. The movement of the watches intricate components can be seen through the sapphire crystal caseback. The watch also includes the Blancpain “flying” tourbillion to keep the watch accurate throughout the entirety of ownership and a double-disc large date mechanism.

The power reserve on Blancpain Tourbillion Grande Date

The watch is available in a red gold version or white. The L-evolution Tourbillion Grande Date offers the well know dial from the L-evolution collection, matching the color of the watch casing. The rubber-lined alligator leather strap completes the magnificent luxury watch and lets the owner know that comfort and performance were at the forefront of the watchmakers mind when the Tourbillion Grande Date was conceived.

This innovation allows for more functions or more room for great looking dials which Blancpain is known for. The L-evolution watches are top tier in luxury and the new power reserve indicator will only make them better. Anyone would be lucky enough to own such a fine timepiece.

New Blancpain Model for 2012

This new model introduced by Blancpain is a new trendy watch sure to attract many customers this year. While this time piece sticks to its most classic collection’s roots, this watch brings an original touch to the Blancpain family. Layers upon layers of translucent blue have been applied to the dial to add a beautiful depth effect.

The round white-gold case is a perfect size for most men, measuring at 40 millimeters in diameter. Within the case is an ultra-slim Calibre 7663Q which contains 244 parts and 32 jewels to create a three day power reserve function. The straight minute and hour hands point to roman numeral hour indicators. The hands contain the great feature of self-winding movement. The curvy hand that is displayed in this watch is the serpentine date pointer. One will notice that on the bottom half of the watch there is a section for retrograde seconds. To protect the dial, the case is encompassed in sapphire scratch resistant crystal. A great feature of this watch is that it is water resistant in up to 100 feet of water, making this time piece very desirable for a day of water sports at the lake or that big summer cruise. The band is alligator leather with alzavel lining, designed for comfort. The strap contains a folding clasp to ensure that this fancy time piece will be secured to your wrist at all times. The color of the strap is a gorgeous deep blue, matching the dial perfectly.

The classic style and simplicity this watch contains makes it the perfect time piece for just about any occasion. The elegance of this watch makes it perfect for formal parties or those weekend-long business trips. With a new hot watch like this, one is sure to be the center of attention at any event.

The Blancpain Fifty Fathoms is one of those watches that is revered by all vintage watch fans.  Hell, even their boxes sell for over $ 1300 these days.  It was one of, if not the, very first dedicated dive watches, and its story rather dramatic (click here for that).  The Fifty Fathoms has seen a host of different variations throughout its life, but none more iconic than that with the “No Radiation” dial.

In 2010, Blancpain brought back the “No Radiation” dial Fifty Fathoms in a new 45mm case, and just the other day we got to play with one.  The watch is a fitting tribute to the original, though considerably “shinier”.  It does look like the original Fifty Fathoms but wears much bigger, which is not necessarily a bad thing to many.

It is a limited edition of 500 pieces in stainless steel and retails for $ 15,300.  For more details, click here.

Blancpain HH Manufacture 13 Visiting The Blancpain Haute Horology Watch Manufacture

Blancpain is one of the oldest Swiss watch brands but it was on the verge of death before being taken over by Jean-Claude Biver. This was of course before Biver’s purchase of Hublot, and before Blancpain he was at Omega. Biver is said to have pretty much saved Blancpain (just as he did with Hublot) – a good thing because today, despite the brand’s literal English translation of “white bread,” very few boring things are going on inside the manufacture.

Biver sold Blancpain to the Swatch Group a few years ago. The brand’s CEO right now is Marc Hayek, one of (the late and regrettably lost) Nicolas Hayek’s sons. His rule of the brand has taken it into a series of different directions, and Blancpain has a few distinct personalities as a watch maker. Those personalities include being a classic watch maker, a complicated watch maker, and dive watch maker, a racing watch maker, and a contemporary high-end complex avant garde watch maker. They also have adopted a mechanism similar to the tourbillon called the carrousel. Why? I hear it is because they feel too many people are making tourbillon based movements and they wanted to be different. It is a small distinction, but yet another angle to the brand’s personality. Oh, and they make extremely well-made and high quality animated erotic watches. Yes, you surely should not forget those.

Blancpain HH Manufacture 25 Visiting The Blancpain Haute Horology Watch Manufacture

Most high-end brands with ties to the 18th century are pretty serious, but Blancpain seems to have a bit of a sense of humor – or at least a sense of adventure. Making erotic watches using world-class engraver talent to carve miniature nudes copulating is just the beginning. They also do things like partner with famous chefs and of course, supercar maker Lamborghini. It is worth mentioning that viewing a 200,000 Swiss Franc erotic minute repeater watch in a small mountain town in Switzerland with their conservative inhabitants is amusing, to say the least.

On this trip Blancpain invited me inside of their highest-end manufacture to look at their items of haute horlogerie and watch making art. There is another arm to Blancpain that is the Manufacture Blancpain – once known as Frederic Piguet. This watch movement manufacture was/is supplying high-end more mass produced movements for the top brands in the Swatch Group. These include Breguet, Omega, Jaquet Droz, and Glashutte Original. According to Blancpain these manufactures are each going to be making more and more movements in-house (as they already each do make at least some movements in-house). We will see how that goes in a few years. Currently, the Blancpain name will be associated with the both the movements inside Blancpain watches and others movements that are made available to a few other Swatch Group brands.

Blancpain HH Manufacture 23 Visiting The Blancpain Haute Horology Watch Manufacture

The place I visited was a smaller facility compared to the larger Manufacture Blancpain that was down the road. At the “HH manufacture” Blancpain produces its most complicated watches and also houses artisans that engrave and otherwise decorate their watches. I was most impressed by a friendly French woman who was their top master engraver. Recently awarded by the French government for her talents, she produces work that is quite literally incredible.

Movement decoration and engraving is a big deal at Blancpain. This year they announced a new collection of limited edition pieces with city scenes engraved on the movement surface. A few watches (each totally unique) will be engraved for Blancpain boutiques around the world. I sat with Blancpain’s engravers and designers as they looked at photographs of cities for inspiration. One gentleman was looking at pictures of buildings in New York City. He uses these to create drawings of proposed scenes that might make their way on to watches. The drawings are handed to Mr. Hayek who makes the final decision on what drawings will be realized in engraved form. It is a tough decision as each engraved scene takes hundreds of hours to hand-engrave under a microscope on the movement surfaces and bridges. It is trying work and the people at Blancpain are some of the best.

It goes without saying that Blancpain offers personalized service for their wealthiest clients. Mostly coming from Asia, Blancpain works with people to engrave everything from dogs to grandmothers on movements and automatic rotors. It isn’t cheap, but for discerning clients it is worth the expense and waiting period.

Blancpain isn’t open much to the media but they do invite clients and customers to the manufacture regularly. People in Asia especially feel that it is important to buy your Swiss watch while actually in Switzerland. It also gives Blancpain a nice opportunity to show off just how long it takes for them to build their most complex creations. One such model is known as the 1735. It was the most complex wrist watch in the world for its time and only something like 30 were ever made. The model came out in the mid 1990s and only recently did Blancpain build the last piece. Only one or two people at Blancpain can assemble the million dollar watch, which can take a whole year to put together.

Using sapphire bridges, and a case made out of both gold and sapphire crystal, the Blancpain Carrousel Sapphire watch is a beautiful example of the brand’s focus on both traditional watch making and modern approaches to aesthetics and luxury. The design allows for a wonderful view of the minimalist movement. At the heart of these complex watches is art and complication. The manufacture itself contains copious amounts of wood-lined walls and scenic views through its windows. It is an ideal location to make a traditional Swiss timepiece. More so than even other similarly priced brands, effort is placed on having the watch makers themselves really feel enveloped in the brand’s theme. It is a nice effect as many manufactures are quite industrial in feel and don’t appear to be very connected to that brand’s marketing image.

Blancpain HH Manufacture 2 Visiting The Blancpain Haute Horology Watch Manufacture

Blancpain HH Manufacture 17 Visiting The Blancpain Haute Horology Watch Manufacture

Most of the time spent on these watch movements involves finishing, decoration, and testing. It is surprising to me each time I hear how a movement is completely assembled and tested… and then disassembled, cleaned, and reassembled before delivery to the customer. There is a mode the Swiss have for making timepieces that is inherently time consuming and expensive. Some call it luxury, but the Swiss simply have their protocol and national pride.

Blancpain has impressive capabilities as a traditional watchmaker and seemingly aims to compete with brands like Vacheron Constantin – Though Vacheron doesn’t have nearly as an impressive a sport watch collection. I will leave a discussion on Blancpain’s diver watches for another time. When I think of Blancpain’s haute horlogerie face I now mostly think of the dedicated individuals at the manufacture working hard to put the small movements together and decorating the watches both inside and out beautifully.

This is perhaps one of the stranger posts we have done on HODINKEE, but it is for something in the vintage watch world that is rarely, if ever seen: an original Blancpain Fifty Fathoms box.

As you know, we love vintage Blancpain diving watches, and they have skyrocketed in value the last couple years. So, finding original box of these 1950s divers (like one that came with this new old stock Blancpain Aqua Lung) is nearly impossible, perhaps because of their very simple, disposable nature. This one is currently on eBay and will be ending soon, available here.

And another bit of trivia for you. The strap that was often originally on these Blancpains was an Apollo Tropic strap that you can see for sale here. It is always interesting to learn what kind of packaging, materials, and straps originally accompanied the vintage watches that we prize today.
