NYC – Battery: One New York Plaza

One New York Plaza, the southernmost of all Manhattan skyscrapers, was built in 1969 by William Lescaze & Assocs. and Kahn & Jacobs. The South Street side features a lower projecting wing, over which the 50-storey, 631 foot tall main mass rises with its notched corners. The facade, designed by Nevio Maggiora, is of boxlike "beehive" pattern with the windows recessed within, made of aluminium-clad wall elements. A portion of the mid-facade on the wing roof level is of dark steel plating, apparently to accommodate HVAC equipment. The top of the building forms a cornice-like protrusion which houses an exclusive dining club.

Paris – Musée du Louvre: Appartements Napoléon III – Le Trône de Napoléon Ier aux Tuileries

When Napoleon was crowned emperor in 1804, Percier and Fontaine were entrusted with the decoration of the throne rooms in the Tuileries and Saint-Cloud palaces. In 1807 they were also given the task of decorating the throne room at Fontainebleau. The gilded wood throne was the work of François-Honore-Georges Jacob-Desmalter, who came up with a completely new style. The throne is straight-backed. The rounded upper edge of the backrest is decorated with a laurel torus. The arm posts are in the form of pilasters topped with a ball. The throne is upholstered with embroidered, blue silk velvet. What made the design so new was the inclusion of large-scale renderings of the new emperor’s heraldic insignia—the letter N, an eagle, the neck-chain of the Legion of Honor, and bees—and the shape of the throne’s back. The central medallion of a carpet was woven at the Savonnerie factory in 1810. The vases and pedestals of the room are Egyptian style from 1806. The tapestry, La Rina en la Venta Nueva, designed by Goya dates to the last quarter of the 18th century.
The Château de Fontainebleau National Museum has loaned Napoleon’s throne from the Tuileries palace to the Louvre’s Department of Decorative Arts.

Home from the party

This is after I rode pretty far downtown NYC, hung out at my hair stylist’s birthday party, then rode home. The weather is super cool and lovely right now. Traffic was light due to the holiday. It’s late so I didn’t feel too safe stopping to take an outfit pic. This is in the gated courtyard of my building that has security guards at night, so that’s OK.
