We’ve done it before and we’re doing it again.  Take a guess at how much this incredible, previously unknown Breguet “Resonance” pocketwatch will sell for in today’s Christie’s sale, and whoever guesses closest, will win a year’s subscription to the incredible Christie’s auction catalogs, which are fast becoming the most interesting horological history books in the world.

Your guess should be the final hammer price plus commission, in Swiss Francs.  Be sure to leave a working email address with your guess.  Have at it!

Auction house Bonhams 1793 is hammering watches (pocket watches and wrist watches) on the 22nd of May. Their catalog has been published today for this auction in Knightsbridge (London) and has some nice pieces.

Hanhart Chronograph 1940

Between the fair share of usual suspects (Rolex, Omega, IWC etc), this 1940s Hanhart chronograph with hand wound caliber 40 movement caught my attention. Not because of the condition, which seems to be quite poor, but because it resembles with Hanhart’s current ‘Pioneer’ collection so well. Their MkI watch from the Pioneer collection with black dial and Arabic numerals is based on those very first mono pusher chronographs with caliber 40 movements (1938).

Hanhart Pioneer Mk1

Hanhart uses a movement (caliber HAN3601) based on ETA’s caliber 7753 that has been transformed into a two-register chronograph with mono-pusher. This one button is used for start, stop and reset of the chrono hands. Although the sub registers at 3 and 9 o’clock are located a bit more to the outer side of the dial on the vintage model, a lot of details (e.g. hands) have been respected by Hanhart.

Estimated value of the vintage Hanhart caliber 40 chronograph is $ 1,100 – $ 1,400 USD. A new Hanhart Pioneer Mk1 chronograph (ref. 714.210-011) is approx $ 3,400.- USD.

This auction item can be seen here (click), at Bonhams website. Other interesting lots are this vintage Speedy with wrong dial (but nevertheless), and this vintage IWC. Anyway, make sure you’ll educate yourself on any of these watches before you bid, I am not too impressed by the item descriptions and condition of the watches offered by Bonhams.

The first Speedmaster watch, the CK2915, is up for auction at Dr H Crott auctions on the 11th of May. Together with a lot of Patek Philippe and Rolex watches, they have this 1958 Speedy CK2915-2 listed in very nice condition. It has been serviced in 2011 at Omega in Switzerland, but they’ve managed to keep it as original as possible in my opinion.

Omega Speedmaster CK2915

This particular Speedmaster was produced in 1958 by Lemania, which was owned by Omega at that time and were licensed to do so, and shipped to Argentina. The picture above shows the beautiful symmetrical case (39mm) with straight lugs and the lack of crown guards that they’ve added to the Speedy a few years later (starting with reference 105.012).

OMEGA Speedmaster CK2915-2

Auction house Dr.H. Crott estimated 45.000 – 65.000 Euro ($ 61.1K – $ 92.2K USD) for this watch, which might be a bit enthusiastic given the fact that it has been serviced after all. But let’s wait and see of course.

The Speedmaster CK2915-2 has, like all pre 198 models, a caliber 321 chronograph movement with column wheel which was replaced by caliber 861 later on. Omega still uses this movement (modified later on with one extra jewel, calling it caliber 1861) for their current Speedmaster Professional “Moonwatch” references.

Omega caliber 321

A beautiful watch which will certainly get a lot of attention during the auction and if there’s an acceptable reserve, it will fetch a high price. For more information on the upcoming Dr H Crott auction, click here. This Speedmaster CK2915 ‘Broad Arrow’ is lot 34551 and can be found here directly.

Miami Heat forward and two-time NBA MVP LeBron James joined Celine Dion and Audemars Piguet CEO Francois-Henry Bennahmias at an event to aid the Baptist Cardiac and Vascular Institute. Audemars Piguet became Official Timekeeper for Baptist Hospital in March of 2011, in recognition of the storied watchmaker’s five year partnership with the Baptist Hospital Foundation, which is the humanitarian branch of the Baptist Hospital.

The evening began with a concert given by Dion, which was a gift from the singer in honor of the hospital’s work in saving the life of her husband Rene Angelil. The concert was followed by an auction of a Jules Audemars Chronograph Tourbillon watch. LeBron James, who was named Audemars Piguet global ambassador in April 2011, went on to auction two of his floor seats to a Miami Heat vs. Celtics game. The auction of the luxury items netted nearly $ 500,000 towards the planned expansion of Miami’s Baptist Cardiac and Vascular Institute.

The Jules Audemars Chronograph Tourbillon is a 43mm timepiece with manually wound 2889 caliber movement with 70 hour power reserve. The case back is translucent sapphire, and the piece contains 335 parts, 286 of which are hand-finished.

The Baptist Cardiac and Vascular Institute founder and medical director Dr. Barry Katzen, who had been working on non-invasive arterial procedures, lead the medical team that treated Angelil in 2009. Because Angelil was not a candidate for surgery, his team of doctors investigated alternative approaches. “They had heard about [Dr. Katzen’s] work with non-invasive treatments,” Angelil said. “They basically told me he was the best person to take care of me.” The expansion of the institute will include a Center for Advanced Endovascular and Structural Heart Therapy and a national Center for Aneurysm Therapy, in addition to other specialized treatment centers. The concert and the auction, which took place at The Fillmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason Theater, raised $ 6 million for the expansion. Said Audemars Piguet CEO Francois-Henry Bennahmias, “We have developed significant relationships in South Florida and as our way of saying thank you are honored to support the work of Baptist Hospital, which does so much good in this community.”

Brand ambassador LeBron James will collaborate with Audemars Piguet on a planned limited edition timepiece in recognition of their partnership. A portion of the proceeds from future auctions of the watch will go to the LeBron James Family Foundation, a charity founded for the purpose of creating initiatives to strengthen the cultural and economic foundations of single-parent households. Says Bennahmias,“We have a history of partnering with those at the top of their game and right now, LeBron is like a comet. Not only does he burn up the court, but he maintains the right balance of family, philanthropy and fame.”

The Jaeger-LeCoultre luxury watch manufacturer has hosted festivals and auctions worldwide. This past year the proceeds from one auction were entirely donated to prevent illegal fishing in the largest Sanctuary of the Eastern Tropical Pacific.

Jaeger-LeCoultre auctioned a limited edition “LeCoultre Special Amerique 1959″ commemorative edition watch. The winning bid was approximately 27,000 USD and the winner although anonymous, was said to be ‘elated’ with the rare watch. This unique timepiece was a prototype to the ‘Memovox Tribute to Deep Sea’ divers watches. Jaeger-LeCoultre spokesman said ‘It was the first diving watch ever to be equipped with an alarm and self winding Calibre.’ The funds were all donated to Colombia’s Malpelo Fauna and Flora Society.

LeCoultre Special Amerique 1959

The Colombian Navy currently spends an average of 20 days a month patrolling the Sanctuary which provides a critically needed habitat to internationally threatened species. This was the third auction devoted for the benefit of ‘World Heritage’ marine sites. On May 4th 2011, Jaeger-LeCoultre signed an innovate ‘Tides of Time’ partnership with the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to continue the needed protection of marine environments. UNESCO has been supporting the World Heritage Center with the necessary financing to continue its conservation campaigns for years.

In August Jaeger-LeCoultre held another auction, this time to benefit “The Salam Centre” in the Sudan. The efforts are aided in part by celebrities that will be participating in the 68th ‘Venice International Film Festival’ that lasts for ten days. Jaeger-LeCoultre has been sponsoring this festival that is organized by the Biennale di Venezia organization since 2005. It was during this festival that Jaeger-LeCoultre decided to organize a charitable auction by hosting an ‘exclusive event’ the “Reverso for Emergency, Helps the Salam Centre” on September 1st. The event will be featuring celebrities from around the world.

Reverso for Emergency

The Salam Centre has been offering adults and children suffering from cardiac pathologies specialized assistance since 2007. Jaeger-LeCoultre will be financing 10 operations and to commemorate this event, it will be auctioning a specially made watch called the ‘Reverso for Emergency.’ This luxury watch is from their ‘Grande Reverso Ultra Thin’ model line and made available in both men’s and women’s versions. It has been especially painted in lacquer and features the Salam Centre symbol on its cover, a red heart. This chronograph offers a manual mechanical movement, water resistant to 30 meters, luminescent hands and comes with a certificate of authenticity.
