Marvin was founded in 1850 by two brothers (by the name of Didisheim) in Saint-Imier, in the middle of the Jura. Before we write yet-another-romantic-but-sad-story about a watch company that didn’t survive the quartz crisis in the 1970s but DID have some nice watches before that time we are going to stop here.

Just a few years ago, Marvin Watches Co was brought back to life again by its current owners, true passionate people about watches and the watch industry. We know, because we’ve met them during BaselWorld and at their current headquarters in Vaumarcus, Switzerland.

Marvin Regulator Automatic M115

The nice thing about being a watch manufacturer with some history, is that you might have some antique catalogs and drawings of watches that once were yours. Marvin has such luck, as they made pretty nice (and affordable) pieces in the 20th century. Some of their current models are also based on those vintage timepieces but Marvin also invests quite an amount of time and resources in designing new watches as well. The Loeb collection is a perfect example of that.

However, we love watches that have some ‘vintage DNA’ and picked the Marvin M115, which is their own code for the Marvin Regulator Automatic from their Malton collection. This 42mm diameter round watch has a very cool Regulator feature that we’ve seen on other watches as well (Chronoswiss, IWC, Sinn). Chronoswiss was the first to design a Regulator for a wrist watch, as it is normally something for clocks, and it has been their ‘signature’ watch ever since. Marvin designed a Regulator as well, in three different flavors and here is what we think.

Marvin M115 Regulator

Marvin achieved to design and produce a round watch with a classic looking regulator lay-out, without becoming old-fashioned. This Marvin M115 is a modern wrist watch that’s suitable for the young executive that wants to have his first decent timepiece without having to pick entry-level models from big watch manufacturers and wants to refrain from buying vintage 35mm classic watches as well. Marvin Watches Co uses a nice modern 42mm case with some kind of design signature in the side, as shown below.

Marvin Malton Collection

Inside is a Swiss made movement, based on Dubois-Dépraz caliber 14072. This movement features the Regulator lay-out, a 38-hour power reserve and a date indicator. The date indicator has a small magnifier under the sapphire crystal. As you can see below, the mechanical movement is relatively standard but does have a customized case back for Marvin. However, if you are new to mechanical watches or this will be your first mechanical timepiece, you’ll be excited to have a glance at the movement every once in a while.

Marvin M115 Regulator

As you can see above, the straps have a quick-release to be removed from the case very easily. We’ve seen this system with some Patek Philippe watches as well. By sliding the small button with your nail, you make the spring bar a bit smaller so it can be released from the watch case. A very convenient method to change your straps.

Marvin M115

We are impressed by the design of the case and the clean classic Regulator dial (without becoming a timepiece that’s too classic for young people). The M115 comes with a black dial with grey sub dials, a grained silver dial and a white dial. We’d pick either the grained silver dial or the white dial with the very nice blue hands and matching blue numerals. Being able to read a Regulator dial is a matter of just moments and this feature does give a nice classic nod to the timepiece.

A watch for just over 3000 USD ($ 3120 USD) with a good solid Swiss made mechanical movement, original case design, wonderful designed dial, Regulator feature, a leather quality strap and nicely finished buckle is hard to find these days. The big brands are all scaling up which makes some room for a number of smaller brands with very interesting (and uncommon) timepieces that jump into that gap of $ 1000 – $ 3000 USD watches. Marvin watches start at under $ 1000 USD and go up to approx $ 3000 USD.

You can see and order their watches on-line, or through a selected number of dealers.

Back again for part two of Guns and Glory. As we learned last time, the transition between the seasons is all about gunmetal, smoke and greyed-out styles for men’s fashions after a Christmas full of bright colors. Last time we talked about Emporio Armani and Zodiac and today, we’ll finish up with Diesel and Fossil’s color-accommodating watch selections.

Diesel

Famous for blazing their own path toward a trend of super oversized faces and bright, ostentatious colors, Diesel dials it down a bit during the grey streak with a few offerings of gunmetal that will cause any passer-by to look twice.

Diesel Gunmetal Selection

Diesel Gunmetal Selection

The style on the far left features a matte gunmetal ion-plated stainless steel bracelet and huge 56mm case, complete with a nine o’clock swing arm LED pusher that activates the backlit accents at six and 12 o’clock, and a three sub-dial chronograph and a date window set in a backdrop of matte grey.

Probably the smallest face Diesel will ever make, the middle selection is still a striking 49mm complete with a stainless steel brushed ion-plated gunmetal case and bracelet. A sun ray three-dial chronograph is set in a textured grey backdrop that also highlights applied stick indexes, 12 and six o’clock numerals and a date window.

Finally, Diesel did a subdued remix of their biggest and brightest style that’s so big, you could set three different time zones on it. The style on the far right features a huge chronograph that steals the focus from the other two analog dials. Complete with a 66mm case and bracelet in ion-plated gunmetal, this piece has two pushers to control the chronograph and the digital dial, and two crowns to set the other two analog faces nestled in a knurled black backdrop. With so much going on, it’s hard to tell that there’s even a date window available, but it’s there. And this watch is even water-resistant up to 50 meters, meaning this thing could probably swim better than you, and in three different time zones.

Fossil

Built with all authenticity, Fossil sometimes sets trends for other, more expensive brands to follow. In keeping with the seasonal transition, Fossil offers a few great styles that pair that palatable grey tone and a sleek professionalism that can accommodate any style of dress.

Fossil Gunmetal Selections

Fossil Gunmetal Selections

Fossil brings a pop of color to the otherwise muted grey with the Machine watch. Featuring a machinated blue ion-plated top ring, this style highlights a three-dial chronograph against a gunmetal backdrop that accentuates white-tipped indexes and hands. The stainless steel case is connected to an aluminum-reinforced silicone band that’s sporty and sleek and able to be worn anywhere with anything.

The new Nate style might be inspired by Diesel, with an oversized 50mm brushed stainless steel, ion-plated gunmetal case and bracelet. The woodgrain-inspired dial is so big that you hardly recognize the chronograph in the middle, but it certainly highlights the gunmetal indices and numeral 12, nine, six and three and even includes a small date window. This style has huge lugs, fingertip pushers and crown, and white and red hands that definitely pop against the wooden background.

And for the classic lover that still wants a bit of mystery and sport, the left style features the versatility of ion-plated gunmetal case and multi-link bracelet, complete with housing around the crown. Set against a matte grey dial is the chronograph, indexes and hands, all highlighted in silver for a fresh clean pop that’s sure to mesh well with suits and casual wear.

As a transition between the seasons, the backdrop to men’s fashions in luxury watches is all grey smoking guns. Gray, high-shine stainless steel, gunmetal and smoke provide the cleansing palette for men after a Christmas season bustling with color. Emporio Armani, Zodiac, Diesel and Fossil are all accommodating with selections that provide the subdued palette needed for other colors to pop.

Emporio Armani

Known as the well-respected brand that has withstood generations of fashion-savvy consumers, Emporio Armani offers a great selection of greyed-out watches that still surprisingly draw much attention. The Emporio Sportivo (L) features a 43mm face finished in polished and brushed grey ion-plated stainless steel, and a matte sun ray chronograph for a polished, clean look. The more active Sportivo (M) bares it all with a transparent top ring, a grey stainless steel 45mm case and a crisp grey silicone band. Be careful, as this watch is only water-resistant up to 5 ATM and by no means should be taken diving. The Emporio Classic (R) offers understated elegance with its multi-linked, brushed IP grey stainless steel bracelet, 43mm textured black chronograph dial with high-gray indexes.

Grey Emporio Selection

Zodiac

If you’re looking for a watch that will stick with you wherever you go, Zodiac is up to the challenge. Famous for taking on the depths of the ocean, Zodiac is Swiss-made and sports-ready, whatever your sport may be. The Zodiac ZMX-03 (L) pairs light grey with tangerine LED-backlit accents against a stamped matte grey dial and includes an anti-reflective sapphire crystal, a 50mm stainless IP sand-sprayed gray case and two non-allergenic rubber straps, complete with changing tool. The ZMX-02 (M) features a heavy-duty brushed gray stainless steel and titanium case, a fixed tachymeter-engraved top ring, racer-inspired pushers and an interchangeable grey rubber strap with changing tool. Finally, the ZMX-05 (R) boasts a matte gunmetal IP stainless steel case, an aluminum-inserted uni-directional top ring, tangerine super-luminova accents against a sand-sprayed grey dial and a greyed-out non-allergenic rubber strap. All Zodiac watches are water-resistant to at least 10 ATM and are definitely the choice for the adventurist looking for a watch that will keep ticking. As a bonus, many Zodiac watches contain interchangeable straps and changing tools for the ultimate in versatility.

Zodiac Grey Selections

We will continue with Diesel and Fossil in Guns and Glory, Pt. Two, but know that grey is an incredibly cool and calming color that is versatile and accommodating to other colors, allowing your grey accessories to mesh well with any look, from professional, to dress-down casual.

I don’t know about Breitling, but you can check here for Rolex watches. They seem to be high grade watches with real gold in the links.

While we’re on a roll posting watches with just insanely beautiful movements (the new ALS Datograph, the Laurent Ferrier Tourbillon Double Spiral), we thought we’d show you another.  The De Bethune DB25T has probably the coolest looking movement around.  It’s not as traditional as the Lange or the Ferrier, it’s a little more Vulcanian than that.

Though, unlike the 2011 Geneva Grand Prix winning DB28, you’d have no idea from from looking at the DB25T that there is anything special under the hood.  The DB25T is rather subdued on the dial-side (relatively speaking, of course) but still very De Bethune-y.
