Some watches today seem to focus on gaudy embellishments or gimmicks to draw in buyers, but the Victorinox Swiss Army AirBoss Mach 8 Special Edition Watch let its functionality sell the timepiece. Where some watches are barely readable and pride design before punctuality, the AirBoss Mach 8 provides a timely tool with precise mechanics.

Victorinox has spent a long time in the business of making reliable products that can survive even the harshest of conditions. Best known for creating the first Swiss Army Knife in 1987, the company has continued to expand their success into many other tools, including watches.
Named after and for the “air boss” on aircraft, the watch refers to the coordinator on the flight deck of a naval aircraft carrier. Air bosses have a long history of requiring extraordinarily accurate watches to properly calculate travel times and fuel percentages and to coordinate planes landing and launching off the ship.

As such, the watch features dozens of useful features and a dedication to precision measurements to ensure that even an air boss will have the ship running as smoothly as the mechanics on the watch.
This watch is a playground of features—it’s practically a Swiss Army Knife in itself (without the toothpick). With luminescent hands and dot markers, a bi-directional rotating bezel with 60 minute drive scale, date window, automatic movement, and chronograph features, this watch is ready to survive your own daily battleground in style.
The function includes minutes, seconds, and tenths of a second and all the chronograph dials are easily distinguishable on the dial thanks to their luminescent coating. All the numbers are large and clearly marked on the black dial. The chronograph is doubly useful in that uses a startup button at the 8 o’clock position, making it easier to engage the stop/start functions.

The timepiece is as durable as it is tricked out: the antiglare sapphire crystal dial window, stainless steel case, and water resistance of up to 100 meters/330 feet make this watch ready to survive the elements.
The black cowhide strap with contrasting stitching keeps this watch comfy as well as stylish, while the clear numbers make the watch very easy to read in a variety of adverse conditions.
For those who are looking for a functional watch, extraordinary precision, and a price tag that won’t cost you an arm and a leg, the Victorinox Swiss Army AirBoss Mach 8 Special Edition watch is a great addition to your arsenal of tools.

Swiss Army Dive Master 500 2012 watches 2 Swiss Army Dive Master 500 Watches For 2012

I’ve always really liked the Swiss Army Dive Master collection of watches. Over the last few years the brand has released a range of these models in both quartz and mechanical form. I personally reviewed a Swiss Army Dive Master 500 watch here. For 2012, Swiss Army has “re-launched” the Dive Master 500. Nothing radically new, but the cool watch remains… cool.

Most people seeing the new Dive Master 500 versions will first notice the quartz models with the new dials. The sword-shaped hands have been replaced with a fat arrow hand and a baton style hand. There are also new hour markers and dial decor. On most (but not all) versions, the orange minute hand is a sporty white color. What do you think of it?

Some of my favorite Dive Master watches came on metal bracelets (such as here). Those were really cool, and I like that the gunmetal color of most of the cases has endured. You can find other Swiss Army Dive master men’s watches from previous years here. For 2012, a new case size for the Dive Master 500 is available. Think of it as a lady’s model. The men’s version is still 43mm wide while the new smaller case is 38.5mm wide. It comes in most of the same colors, as well as ones like purple. I guess a guy could still pull that off. The Dive Master 500 was never the largest wearing watch – so I think most men should check out the 43mm wide version first.

The watch is still a good value for what it is. 500 meters of water resistance, sapphire crystal, good design, and highly legible dial. The cases are all steel with PVD coatings for the various colors. Inside all of the watches are Swiss made movements. All the smaller pieces and the one’s with the arrow hand come with Swiss quartz movements while the three automatics (red, gray and brown), have Swiss ETA 2892 automatic movements inside. The automatics further have outgoing dials – which may have been modified a bit. Hard to tell. Would be nice to have the new dials available as automatics as well.

The 9 new Swiss Army Dive Master Models for 2012 are mostly style and color additions. Perhaps in a few years we will get a totally fresh Dive Master. It really is a strong collection and I like where Swiss Army goes with the design. Price for the quartz models is $ 795 each, and $ 1,250 for the automatic models.

It is simple combat decorum that reminds us to never bring a gun to a knife fight. That same sort of decency is evident in Swiss Army Victorinox‘s new collection of trendy watches that reach toward the urban audience. Does Victorinox hit the target?

Victorinox Originals

Swiss Army Victorinox Original Collection

When paying any price, you should get what you pay for and at  $ 300 each, you don’t get much with the Victorinox Original, but it’s not without trying. The Original features a militaristic dual dial that offers military time within the inner ring and stenciled numerals at nine, six and three. The backdrop of the dial is fashioned to look like brushed steel, but unfortunately is not. The 40mm nylon fiber case is topped with an aluminum bezel that’s been (poorly) ion-plated with each color (from left to right, black, desert beige, khaki-green and navy grey) and the watch is finished off with a NATO nylon strap that was met with complaints of “material fuzzing.” Not something you’d expect from a watch that demands $ 300 when Armani Exchange is offering similar chronograph styles, with more of a following, for about the same price.

Victorinox Infantry

Swiss Army Victorinox Entry-level Infantry

After scouring the Victorinox website for a suitable replacement that might actually find a place in the urban realm, I found the Infantry collection, a more classic series of watches with varied prices based on features and materials. Staying as close to the starting $ 300 price, I found a very clean design that still incorporated a militaristic nature and was able to perform without faltering on the first wear. For an additional $ 75, you get a genuine leather strap, a stainless steel case and top ring, a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, water resistance up to 330 feet (10ATM) and  a three-o’clock date window peering out of a black dial with a military time markings within the inner ring and seconds along the outer. To top it all off, the watch has large luminous hands that make telling time a cinch and the piece is equipped with an end-of-life indicator that warns the wearer of a dying battery by stopping the second hand for 4 seconds and then speeding up to the correct time. The watch will warn you of its impending death a whole week in advance.

Fossil Flight

For $ 135, FLIGHT, don't fight!

The other Infantry styles offer more sleek designs and increased functionality, but of course, they’re more expensive. For my money, I’d much rather avoid the knife fight and stick with a solid Fossil, aviation-inspired Flight watch. Or span out to Diesel for the avant-garde approach to design that the Victorinox Original claims, but fails to live up to.

Swiss Army Original Chronograph Watch 2 Swiss Army Original Chronograph Watch

Over the summer of 2011 Swiss Army Victorinox released a new version of their “Original watch” that I covered here. It was a modern rendition of the original watch that put the brand on the map. Retaining the good looks and legible dial, the “new” Original watch is more modern in its looks and presentation.

Now just a little bit later Swiss Army Victorinox announces and will soon release a chronograph version of the Swiss Army Original. In case it was not obvious, the watch will be called the Swiss Army Original Chronograph. As you can tell, in comparison to the three-hand Original model the Chronograph features a slightly different dial. This is all due to the addition of the chronograph subdials.

While they don’t specifically mention it, I think that Swiss Army is using an ETA quartz chronograph movement. It is certainly a Swiss made quartz movement at the least. My favorite part of the Original Chronograph is the integration of the chronograph pushers. The large rounded push-pieces look comfortable and stylish. The subdials on the dial for the chronograph functions offer a bold and legible look with 30 minutes of timing and 1/10 of a second precision. While in while and starkly contrasting with the dial – they maintain the colorful military look of the watch.

In its chronograph form the Original watch retains the same 40mm wide size and case material (which is plastic with a “nylon fiber middle case” and aluminum bezel). Water resistance is 100 meters and there is lume on the hands. One thing missing however is the 24 hour scale that most Swiss Army watches tend to have. Colors for the watch are the same “navy grey, commando black, desert beige, and khaki green.” All watches come on NATO style straps.

These fun-looking Swiss Army Original Chronograph watches will be available in the Spring of 2012. Price will be $ 450 (up from $ 295 for the three-hand models).

swiss army alpnach black ice watch Victorinox Swiss Army Alpnach Black Ice Chronograph Watch

This is the newest watch from Victorinox Swiss Army, but I am not sure I recognize it as a Swiss Army watch. Over the last few years Swiss Army watches have been changing a lot. Not only in style, but also in terms of the types of watches they are offering. I mostly think of them as offering really nice quartz watches that are a great value for $ 300 -$ 500 bucks. But this Alpnach Black Ice Chronograph is a mechanical watch for close to 2,000 Euros. Does it make sense?

The trend at the brand has been “mechanical mechanical!” for a good set of years now. I don’t mind more mechanical offerings from Swiss Army, but I sure hope that doesn’t mean they are fully abandoning their quartz watch base. Good news comes from pieces like the “new” Swiss Army Original watch that offer a strong look and Swiss quartz movement for an entry level price of around $ 300. Swiss Army is really popular in the US and I just don’t want them to price themselves out of their own market by going full mechanical with watches from $ 1,000 – $ 2,000. The same people who are brand loyalists and want to go from a cheap digital watch to a nicely design steel Swiss watch aren’t gonna stomach a $ 1,500 piece like they are one at a quarter of that price.

It isn’t just the price which makes it difficult for me to recognize this timepiece as a Swiss Army watch. It feels as though it is more concerned with image and looking macho than it does being legible and “active classy.” That just isn’t the Swiss Army watch that I know – that likes to mix sober legibility with a slick European design aesthetic. This watch even has one of those ridiculous names that we like to make fun of. “Black Ice Chronograph?” At least I know the Alpnach is related with rescue helicopters. With that little connection Swiss Army seems to borrow one of Hamilton’s less effective tactics seen in watches like the “X-copter” or whatever they call it. None of this design is really functional, but seems to suggest some abstract macho lifestyle. The 44mm wide steel PVD coated black watch is just a miss-mash of testosterone. It looks like a toy watch for 12 year-old boys playing army. Swiss Army is just plainly a more mature and refined brand than that. I don’t know what they are going for here.

Inside the watch is a Swiss ETA Valjoux 7750 automatic chronograph any Swiss Army enjoys using. Note the less than original (at this point) use of a propeller style subsidiary seconds hand. The seconds hand for the chronograph feels too large, and while I like the mix of black, white, and red colors, there doesn’t seems to be a purpose to the design. Oddly enough the dial feels both bare and cluttered at the same time. Legibility is fine – but nothing close to what I have come to expect from Swiss Army timepieces.

Reports indicate to me that Swiss Army has a new designer – who has been pushing stuff like this. If that is true then I get it. Someone new comes in and tries to mix it up a bit for better or worse. I just hope that they learn their lesson soon because watches like this simply aren’t going to attract the right customers and might just harm Swiss Army’s solid customer base that will not only feel luke-warm to this design, but will be alienated by the high price for such an underwhelming design that in my opinion lacks the brand’s true purpose and spirit. I want to see more nice affordable watches like the “Original” as well as more purpose built in to higher-end watches that genuinely feel like special upgrades from the brand’s bread and butter.

Question by YSIC

‘Tis the season for many traditions. One that I find is getting a back seat is the tradition of having bell ringers at major retailers. Some major companies have asked the bell ringers not to stand outside their doors b/c of the “patrons” not liking it.
So what’s your take on the matter?
Thanks and Merry Christmas!
I have actually boycotted Target ever since they wouldn’t let the bell ringers stand outside. I am all for them taking donations.

well, its for a good cause. but depending on where you are, it can get a little rediculous. like in New York City, they’re at almost every street corner! so i think its fine…in moderation. haha.
