This year at Basel World, Rolex updated the purest of their sport watches, the no-date Sub, with a new reference (114060).  This new no-date Sub very much the same as the earlier no-dates, but there are some difference, which we covered at length in  this detailed look at the new Sub here.

But, to really understand what the 114060 Sub is, we thought it would be best to compare it to a no-date Submariner from forty years earlier, a Reference 5512 from 1972 – and that is exacly what you see above.  These watches are exactly the same, except not at all, don’t you think?

One of our favorite things to do with new watches that are, in theory, connected with the watches of previous generations is put the old and new side-by-side.  You saw it here with the Rolex Explorer II Orange-Hand and here with the Royal Oak Jumbo, and at Basel World, we decided to do it with the excellent new Jack Heuer 80th Birthday Carrera, a watch we showed you in detail here.

You see, Jack Heuer designed his 80th birthday watch himself, and he is also responsible for the conception of the classic Heuer chronos for 40+ years ago, so, we brought along an early 1960s Heuer Carrera (reference 2447N) to see how they look side by side.  Obviously, the biggest difference between the two Carreras is the diameter – roughly a 5mm variance.  But, you can see the hands, hour markers, and shield are very much the same, not to mention the case design. 

What is also interesting is just how nice the 1/5 second scale is on both of these watches – placed expertly on the rehaut (the Carrera was the first watch with this trait – traditionally they were placed on the dial itself).  Withh the 60s 2447N you have a nice white contrast against a black dial, and with the 80th birthday watch, a clean grey again a bright silver. 

So, comparing a Jack Heuer design of 2012 against a Jack Heuer design of the early 1960s, you see that the man still knows how to make a good chronograph, half a century later.

I dont see the big deal about what i said guess Cena lovers are working against me -_- smh THEY CANT STOP US! LOL Thank you to ALL who answered i enjoy reading your opinions/answers& this isnt the same question- This Is Directed to Orton Haters – Whats a couple months or weeks of dominating compared to Cenas 5 1/2 years?
Suddenly Orton has ALOT of haters in the IWC and is being called a “SUPER HERO”/HONESTLY CENA is the ONLY superhero in wwe/im currently a junior in college and graduated in 08-why was John Cena wwe champion for my WHOLE high school career occasionally dropin the title a couple months or weeks every now and then/ Im 90% anti Cena and Ortons been my favorite since 2003 but i alwayz respected and even liked Cena until he discovered his super powers,became stale and didnt drop the title to my #1 favorite of ALL Time HBK who clearly out wrestled him @ wrestlemania 23 and has more wrestling ability in his pinky then Cena could ever hope for/ IMO its OK for Orton to be Dominating as he has because when u look @ his up bringing he HAS THE ABILITY TO DO so- he’s a third generation superstar ,was mentored by HHH&FLAIR, HAS BEATEN THE BEST THERE IS TO BEAT, AND IS THE YOUNGEST WWE CHAMPION IN HISTORY – CENA compared to that ISNT NOTHING and doesnt even measure up when you compare their careers- the only thing good about Cena is he draws in money but accomplishment wise he isnt very impressive and doesnt deserve to dominate like he does or most of whats givin to him especially for a guy with only 5 moves(SERIOUSLY Cenanation do you believe Kurt Angle, Chirs Jericho, Batista, HBK, and(HHH@ wrestlemania 22) couldnt have taken the WWE title off John Cena /i keep reading Orton bashers saying he cant wrestle and if you believe that then YOU CLEARLY know NOTHING about wrestling because he’s one of the most Athletic WWE have to offer and he makes sure EVERY WEEK that his performance is as best it can be and gets angered if it’s not delivered the best it can be for the FANS- he only moves slow because it suits his character but IMO since he became a tweener he delivers his moves alil faster unless disecting an oppenet/I DIDNT POST THIS TO ARGUE I JUST NEED TO UNDERSTAND WHY ANY ORTON HATERS OR CENANATION FEEL THE WAY YOU DO

Few days ago AT&T Inc bought T-mobile and this means at&t will grow bigger if they keep buying all there competitions. My prediction is next 7 years Verizon will surrender to at&t and then qwest will join. This means “ma bell” is back (this sucks) and sprint will for sure will join att. Do you agree?
