Last friday night, we invited you, our dear friends and readers, to join us up at the Park Avenue Armory to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak. The setting was inside the spectacular exhibition combining fine watchmaking with both traditional and digital art from some of the world’s most creative thinkers (which we previewed in video here).
Over 150 HODINKEE readers came to view the exhibition over the three hour event, we have to say, we couldn’t be more pleased with how things turned out. The chance for you, real watch lovers, to be in the same room as over 100 haute horology timepieces from one of the top manufactures in the world (including Gerald Genta’s personal Royal Oak, and Guy Laliberte’s unique grand complication that went into space) was really something special. Also, to be able to talk to senior executives at Audemars Piguet, including Olivier Audemars (who can been seen in several pictures below), head of design Octavio Garcia, and North American CEO Francois-Henry Bennahmias made for an incredible, personal look into a great brand and the people that make it so special.
We want to thank each HODINKEE reader who made it to our special event on Friday and send a sincere thank you to everyone at Audemars Piguet for allowing us to celebrate such an important milestone in your history together.
Above we have prepared a short video recap of the night, and below, several photographs (see if you can find yourself!).

The 40th anniversay of the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak exhibition officially opens to the public today and runs through this saturday. The exhibition will include 100 timepieces, many of which coming into public viewing for the very first time. Included in these lots will be the very first Royal Oak “A-Series” from 1972, Gerald Genta’s personal Royal Oak, and even Guy Laliberte’s one-off grand complication that made it into space!
On top of all the watch goodness, there is a large modern art component to the exhibit – Dan Holdsworth’s photopraphy of the Vallée de Joux, where Audemars Piguet is based will be on display, alongside artist Davide Quayola’s installations experimenting with photography, geometry, sculpture and audiovisuals; and Sebastian Leon Agneessens’s multi-channel sound installation.
We swung by the Park Avenue armory yesterday to get an exclusive early look at the 40th Anniversary Royal Oak Exhibition as it was being assembled. Watch the video above to see what you might expect from this incredible exhibition as it kicks off today, as well as hearing from AP North American President and CEO Francois-Henry Bennahmias, and visual designer Sebastian Leon Agneessens.
Event Reminder: We will be hosting a private, HODINKEE-only reception this coming Friday in celebration of the Royal Oak. Details are here.
It is almost impossible that you didn’t hear about the 40th anniversary of Audemars Piguet’s Royal Oak this year. Designed by the legendary Gerald Genta in 1972 as a luxury sports watch in stainless steel at the price of ten times a Rolex Submariner at that time. Last January, Audemars Piguet introduced a slightly modified successor of their icon watch, the Royal Oak ‘Jumbo’ (ref.15202ST). The dial of this new version is closer to the original Jumbo (ref.5402ST) as Genta designed it in the 1970s. Of course, Audemars Piguet refrained from using their in-house caliber 3120 movement (it is too thick for the Jumbo case) and keeps it real with the caliber 2121 movement, based on Jaeger-LeCoultre’s caliber 920. We did a small comparison of the new Jumbo and the current Jumbo earlier this year (click here to read it).
To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Royal Oak, the Audemars Piguet boutique in New York City has organized a four day exhibition for the public. On display is also the very own Royal Oak Jumbo owned and worn by Gerald Genta himself. Our friends at Hodinkee posted a picture of this Royal Oak 5402ST with strange gold bezel on their blog today (click here). A great way to start this year’s Spring!
If you are – like us – an avid reader of Hodinkee, you are also invited to visit their cocktail reception and private viewing of the Royal Oak collection in the NYC AP boutique. The only thing you need to do is visit this link and contact Hodinkee to sign-up for this event.
Last but not least, during this exhibition, Audemars Piguet also introduces their book ‘Royal Oak’, written by their museum director for the last 20 years. For $ 100 USD, you will receive a book with over 300 pages on one of our favorite stainless steel sports watches ever. For now, this book will only be available at the AP boutiques in Bal Harbour and New York City. In the future, you can also find – or order – it at selected book stores.
Ten years ago, Seiko introduced a GMT model into their high end Grand Seiko range. The watch has gone on to become one the most successful and recognizable models for the sometimes misunderstood side of the brand. This year at Basel, Seiko introduced 2 limited edition Grand Seiko GMTs to celebrate the anniversary, each adorning heavy doses of the brands traditional blue both front and back.
Both watches share the same 9S66 caliber as found in the old model, but beyond that they begin to differ. Ref. SBGM029 is offered with a stainless steel case and measures in at 39.2mm in diameter. It also sports an exterior 24hr bezel quite reminiscent of a certain other famous GMT. Ref. SBGM031 is offered on a crocodile strap and comes in a tad larger at 39.5mm in diameter. This reference also sees the 24hr GMT ring moved to the inner dial, where it can be found on the older models. Both are offered with very dark blue dials, and in most light will appear black.
Both of the watches have see-through case backs, which exhibit the same blue titanium/tungsten rotor, emblazoned with the Grand Seiko Lion. This rotor is a new feature for the movement, and delivers a hefty advantage in performance according to Seiko. It has high elasticity which absorbs vibration and shock “ten times better” than brass. Either way, it adds a sharp touch of detail to the watch and fits nicely into its Japanese personality.
The watch on bracelet is limited to 700 pieces and is priced at $ 6,700. On the croc step the watch is limited to 1,000 pieces and is priced at $ 6,300. Considering the price of a new orange hand from Rolex, these watches represent a great value. Look for them later this year at your nearest Grand Seiko dealer. More pics after the jump.
The Important Modern and Vintage Timepieces auction hosted by Antiquorum on the 11th of March, included some superb timepieces. Not only did I see some very interesting Royal Oak A and B series fetching quite high bids, I also noticed this Star Wheel 125th Anniversary piece from Audemars Piguet. This stainless steel timepiece was made by AP to celebrate their 125th anniversary in 2000 and has been – of course – restricted to 125 pieces only.
This watch was part of the Millenary family of AP, and wears very well on the wrist due to the dimensions of 41 x 37 mm. Movement is caliber AP 2224 and is the genius behind the complex sapphire disc system for displaying the hours on the minutes scale on the right part of the oval dial.
Despite being such a cool Audemars Piguet timepiece in only a very limited production, the price it fetched is relatively low. Just 17500 Swiss Francs for this AP Millenary Star Wheel ref. 25898 ST, complete with box and papers. For instance, the Royal Oak A-Series fetched more than double of this amount.
More information can be found at www.antiquorum.com.
We love the Royal Oak. A lot. So much in fact that we are throwing it a 40th birthday party right here in New York City.
Actually, Audemars Piguet is celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Royal Oak with a truly incredible exhibition of more than 100 different examples of the watch that changed everything, many of which are leaving the Le Brassus Museum for the very first time.
The exhibition will be open for four days (March 21-24) and will be open to the public. The collection of watches from Audemars Piguet will be set atop the artwork of famed contemporary artists Sebastien Leon Agneessens, Quayola and Dan Holdsworth.
On the night of Friday, March 23rd, HODINKEE will host a special celebration in honor of the Royal Oak. While specifics will follow, we invite all of our readers, both new and old, to join us for a private viewing of the watches (with cocktails, of course). RSVP is required, and we welcome everyone interested in attending to send us an email with the number and names of who will be attending.
See you there!

A few days ago Omega announced a new 50th Anniversary Edition of the Seamaster James Bond 300m. The new Bond movie coming out this year is called Skyfall, and this does not appear to be a movie edition of the 007 watch.. so we might be seeing two Bond editions of the Seamaster 300m this year!
Beautiful watch. Some of the interesting features on this one are the red “50″ marker on the new Ceramic dive bezel rings.. Yes, Ceramic! Very cool. If you didn’t figure it out already, the red “50″ is to symbolize the 50th Anniversary. This new version has a Helium “He” periodic symbol on the Helium Escape valve, and also a combination of screws and pins now holding the new Bond Bracelet together. The photos seem to suggest that the new Bond Bracelet is a bit more angular and cut a bit better than before, giving it a fresher look.
Awesome caseback, which is the true highlight of this watch in my opinion. The barrel rifling lines that are the Bond signature as well as the back of a bullet, complete with dimpled primer! The view of that would suggest that you are looking from the back of the barrel rather than the business end.
The watch will feature the Co-Axial Calibre 2507 from Omega, and come in two sizes, 41mm and 36.25mm. The 41mm version will be limited to 11,007 pieces, and the 36.25mm version will be limited to 3,007.
I really like the detail and effort put into this 007 watch!
