So… there were only three riders left in this ROLEX FEI World Cup Qualifying round and nobody had gone clear AND under the allowed time of 69 seconds. Four riders had managed to jump clear rounds but had time penalties. John Whitaker’s round was superb – not only clear but also (just) within the time allowed and it was no wonder that he punched the air at the end. He must have thought that he had taken the victory – surely the last two riders were not going to be up to the task… Well, Edwina Alexander came out immediately after him and turned in an equally fantastic round – clear and under 69 seconds and so therefore a jump-off. The video tells the story so I’ll say no more but it was a fantastic end to a really interesting and exciting competition and I’m so glad that I was there to see it. And what a lovely smile and wave at the end from a well deserving winner Edwina Alexander! I’d like to dedicate this video to my good friend Gabe (SonnyLees)… Go Oz go!!!! Us Poms thought you should get to beat us as a consolation after your disastrous showing at the Olympics! XD

SHOROKHOFF lady avantgarde watch Contemporary Pop Art In The Alexander Shorokoff Lady Avantgarde Watch

This limited edition watch for women by German Alexander Shorokoff reminds me of my youth. Usually watches seem to remind other people of their youth, but when I saw this watch my mind began to wander to being in a kid in the 1980s and 1990s. No, not because I used to wear women’s watch. It is the art.

A large part of my watch fascination comes from being an art lover. Watches are art. They are tools first, but they are tools with artistic real estate. Appreciation of good design and quality aesthetics drives a lot of my commentary. This watch will repulse some and entertain others, but in my eyes it reminds me of cartoons. Back in the 1980s colorful geometric art became really popular. A lot of this had to do with the start of computerized design and graphics slowly taking over hand-drawn work. Organic lines started being replaced by straight lines, and the inclusion of computer graphics into the art world was rapidly taking place.

In the 1990s this design aesthetic began to evolve into a more pop art style. Once straight geometric shapes oddly became fuzzy and hand-drawn. The perfection of computer-rendered shapes seemed to espouse a lash-back. You had artists doing geometric by hand in crude animation styles. Colors that were once solid and primary started to get more fun. The 1990s saw the everything from neon to pastel colors experience a sort of explosion. The best placed one could experience all this were television show intros and cartoons. For me a lot of this was epitomized in the artistic style of early to mid 1990s Nicktoons on the kid’s cable television network Nickelodeon.

While not a perfect analog, the design of the dial in this Lady Avantgarde watch is a pleasant reminder of those shapes and designs. I can also see in my mind the lines of the shapes “wiggle” as being purposefully crudely animated. The asymmetric mixture of shapes, colors, and textures are still however balanced and reminiscent of the playful disorganization of the art style it means to honor. For me I see artistic elements of television cartoons that I grew up with such as Ren & Stimpy, Doug, Rugrats, Rocko’s Modern Life, and more.

Despite what the watch reminds me of, it is actually a combination of artistic styles from all eras of the 20th century. In the dial is everything from art deco to pop art, as well as abstraction. Alexander Shorokoff’s signature “big 60″ is playfully integrated in an interesting way. Notice how the numeral is not placed where the 60 minute marker should be? It is actually to the left of it, and a small arrow points to the correct mark. This is part of the playful disorganization I was referring to above. Note the date window placed inside of the stylized spiral.

Alexander Shorokoff further mixes art with design as the watch dial mixes are with horology. The main elements of a branded watch dial are there complete with descriptive text and areas that are clear hour indicator. The thoughtfully designed dial managed to be legible and artistic at the same time. A little fact that no doubt most people will miss.

While the brand refers to it as a lady’s piece. It doesn’t necessarily need to be that. The case is 39mm wide in steel and contains a Swiss ETA 2824-2 automatic movement. The case as a sapphire display back and is matched to a thick leather strap. The Alexander Shorokoff Lady Avantgarde will be limited to 500 pieces.

Question by Rachel Zertuche

Does anyone know the location where Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone. Thank you for any info given.

Best answer:

Answer by W
Antonio Meucci was the true inventor of the telephone. He had a caveat on the invention, but couldn’t afford the $ 10 to maintain it. In fact, congress recognized these FACTS in 2002 by saying:

“If Meucci had been able to pay the $ 10 fee to maintain the caveat after 1874, no patent could have been issued to Bell.”

The resolution’s sponsor described it as “a message that rings loud and clear recognizing the true inventor of the telephone, Antonio Meucci”.

ADD:

Actually, Fred, you’re a decade off. Bell first started experimenting in 1873. And he didn’t have success until 1876, in Ontario. So you failed to answer the original question correctly.

As for Meucci (to those who gave me thumbs down!) if you don’t believe me, then you should read more about what actually happened. Here’s a good link that provides a basic summary of it:

http://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&q=cache:a07dTYcpPl8J:gram.eng.uci.edu/~ayanoglu/aicc/Meucci.ppt+Antonio+Meucci&hl=en&gl=us&pid=bl&srcid=ADGEESjB4sG2UIzV0S9OyPGw_UuUxiSfpcKJrzFlcIxV8IiUmtVOClq9gijgEF90kS1WTfkCmWH6tDHcoRoAMr1Ttsj3F2xAcbU-iKNSYkWopHWenR5qWvl5N-fZTaNEGNpah4Kk9RKk&sig=AHIEtbTGcJETIXK_4PZSf-EIFJol1qVFlQ

Learn the facts, and then make a judgement.

ADD:

It’s not rewriting history! It’s showing what REALLY happened! They’re simply recognizing the FACTS! Accepting one story as the truth without learning the whole story, is rewriting history.

Silly Canadians, trying to cover up the truth so they can say the telephone was invented in their country!

ADD:

No, it has nothing to do with that!! Meucci was Italian and did a large portion of his experimenting in Italy. Anyone who knows me knows I am definitely not the “all-American” type. I could care less about trying to attribute an invention to America.

And it has nothing to do with what CONGRESS said, it’s just nice congress finally recognized something MANY OF US have known for years.

Now I won’t deny that Bell invented the telephone, in his own right. I’m not even saying he stole the idea from Meucci. BUT, Meucci DID invent it FIRST. If you read about it, you can see there were a number of reasons why he isn’t credited, but the bottom line is, he got screwed.

Alexander Shorokhoff crono Kostya Tszyu KT1 Alexander Shorokoff Chronograph Kostya Tszyu Watch

I haven’t spent much time covering this (Russian named) German brand, but they do make some cool stuff. This piece is a limited edition while a bit more mainstream with some interesting design cues. Yes, that bezel design is from a Vacheron Constantin Overseas. Alexander Shorokoff made this watch in honor of Russian champion boxer Kostya Tszyu and the piece has his name and silhouette all over it.

Tszyu is another person on my list of “people I don’t want to meet in a dark alley alone” but I have a feeling if you did run into him, it would help you out by wearing a watch with his name on it. The watch is actually part of a greater collection of timepieces from Alexander Shorokoff called the “Great Masters of Russia.” Not sure who else got limited edition pieces but, clearly, the collection is meant to appeal to Russian customers. The watch is pretty neat looking and a fine interpretation of how to design a dial around an ETA Valjoux 7750. One thing that I have never seen before is how they mimicked the look of the day/date window with the seconds dial. The dial is rectangular and inside is the number in the limited edition (out of 270). I thought that was very clever.

As is common with Alexander Shorokoff watches, the dial has some very bold Arabic hour numerals and hands. Nothing like bold hands to make me happy and the textures on the dial are nice, as well. These images are obviously pre-production renders so the dial looks flat, however, I don’t think the final pieces will. The metal silhouette of Tszyu (still not sure how to pronounce that) in the chronograph hour registers as a cool, or crappy, element depending on your taste.

The watch is in steel and 42.9mm wide. Over on the back of the watch is a sapphire exhibition caseback and more honors to Kostya as a reminder of how he can kick your ass. Alternatively, if you are Russian, it is likely meant to be a reminder of how Russians can kick ass. Oddly enough, I think Kostya is based out of Australia even though he is Russian, but … Whatever. Enjoy the uber-cheesy video that shows more.

Once again, the Alexander Shorokoff Chronograph Kostya Tszyu will be limited to 270 pieces and will be priced at 4,700 Euros.
