The Avengers may be taking the box office by storm, but there’s another flying figure who’s gracing the skies instead of the silver screen. Yves “Jetman” Rossy, modern day Rocketeer, dropped from a helicopter sporting a Breitling jetpack and soared over Rio de Janeiro for a groundbreaking (skybreaking?) eleven-minute flight in early May of 2012.
Rossy is a Swiss inventor and pilot and the first person to sustain human flight while using a jetpack. Though he has completed several other flights successfully, his most recent flight over Rio de Janeiro is perhaps the most breathtaking yet. The Jetman’s jaunt took him past the Christ the Redeemer statue at speeds of 200-300 km/h.

Rossy has developed his own set of wings, and though he hasn’t quite mastered an unaided takeoff yet, he has managed to fly for a whopping 18 minutes at one time and has even created a simple throttle which helps direct his flight path.
There’s a lot of behind the scenes technical and mechanical know-how to get a project as unusual as a human rocket off the ground. It’s no surprise that Breitling—well known for their history with aeronautical pioneers and, of course, the Breitling Jet Team, that the famous watch brand would have a hand in helping the latest advances in aeronautics get off the ground.
In fact, this is not the Jetman’s first flight with the Breitling. Just last year he shared the skies with the Breitling Jet Team, following the aerobatics of the planes with his own take on the stunts. Rossy’s flight over Brazil was a solo affair (apart from the helicopter drop off), but the Jetman was still accompanied by the trademark set of Breitling wings on his jetpack.

It’s no wonder that Breitling would team up with Rossy. Not only does the brand have a longstanding relationship with aeronautical advances (in fact, the watch built its reputation off of crafting quality watches for pilots), both flight and watches require an incredible attention to detail and mathematics for accuracy.
What’s next for the Jetman? Will he be making tours of locations with oversized statues? Stonehenge would make a great locale, or the Leshan Giant Buddha statue in China. I vote for Mount Rushmore—after all: Teddy Roosevelt was the first American President to fly a plane!
Whatever the locale, Yves “Jetman” Rossy will certainly have his name down in the history books, wearing his bright yellow jumpsuit and Breitling’s wings.

One glance of Bulgari’s Daniel Roth Carillon Tourbillon Minute Repeater watch will immediately transport you to a visual experience in fine art appreciation. The research and development involved to bring this watch to fruition is undoubtedly well worth its notable price tag.

Bulgari is one of a select breed of haute horology manufacturers capable of in-house production of its movement as well as its timepiece research, development and actual production. Bulgari Daniel Roth Carillon Tourbillon demonstrates its brilliant expertise to produce results in particular with its hand-wound DR3300 calibre movement crafted entirely in-house. It consists of 327 parts and beats to the rhythm of a Tourbillon type regulating organ housed within a large sized carriage.

Bulgari Daniel Roth Carillon Tourbillon is the result of several year of careful development. Its design stems from “three hammer striking” mechanisms, an unusual configuration for a watch of this type model which usually consists of two hammers for Minute Repeaters, or four in rare cases such as Grande Sonnerie or grand strike models.

The miniaturization required to produce the required force and clarity of tone were governed by detailed parameters. The exceptional sized calibre with three hammers gives Bulgari Daniel Roth Carillon Tourbillon a higher torque which in turn enhances the acoustic resonance. The set of three gongs is affixed to the mainplate and is coupled with an inertia governor which keeps friction to a minimum when the striking mechanism is in action, hindering any audio interference.

The three hammer Minute Repeater chiming sequence striking three different pitches produces a C note for the hours, and E-D-C sequence for quarter hours, and a single E note for the minutes.

Bulgari Daniel Roth Carillon Tourbillon showcases polished steel for the hammers, gongs and tourbillon carriage and open worked surfaces. The finely decorated mainplate and bridges are metals from the platinum family, platinoids consisting of platinum, rhodium, ruthenium and indium. This high tech coating produces the metal and elegant black color which is visible through the case dial and caseback sapphire crystal.

The watch’s sturdy construction is protected by a pink gold case with Minute Repeater slidepiece on left side, which glides between 7 and 11 o’clock. The crown, instead of bearing Bulgari’s signature logo, is inscribed with numbers from one to 30, in keeping with the watch’s 30 limited edition pieces. It is also water resistant up to 30 meters and showcases well with a brown alligator leather wrist strap which is secured by a triple-blade folding clasp in 18K pink gold.

The Bulgari Daniel Roth Carillon Tourbillon is indeed a work of visual art whose limited edition beauty will place you in a hypnotic trance.

Rolex GMT Master II 1 Rolex GMT Master II Ref. 116713 LN Watch Review

Article and images contributed by Michael Maximilien:

Let’s be honest, Rolex watches are one of the society’s symbol of success around the world.  If you want people to know you’ve made it, then get a Rolex. And, this message is universal, it hardly matters where you are on the globe.

The Rolex models don’t change much and some are so common that on a recent trip to the US east coast, I counted three of us, in close proximity, wearing Rolexes in the train at Atlanta’s Hartsfield Jackson airport going from one terminal to the next.

While wearing a Rolex tends to exude this message of “I made it” (intentionally or not), there are however, plenty of other reasons why buying a Rolex is a great investment and will get you on the road to horological satisfaction and connoisseurship…

When I started my timepiece collection, I consider myself fortunate to have bought a Rolex GMT-Master II (ref. 116713 LN) as my first timepiece. It is one of Rolex’s many iconic designs, and to be frank, it still remains one of my favorite watches to this day.

Rolex GMT Master II 3 Rolex GMT Master II Ref. 116713 LN Watch Review

It’s the measuring stick that I use to compare all of my other acquisitions — those more or less expensive.  I love the GMT-Master II for its classic design, its incredible construction, its feel, and of course the impact that it projects when I wear it.

Rolex created the first Oyster Perpetual GMT watch in the 1950s for Pan Am pilots who wanted a quick way to check and know the time in different timezones.  The classic design has gone through various refinements, but it remains pretty much the same today.

The original Rolex GMT was one of the first watches on the market that could tell time in two timezones at once.  Essentially, Rolex added a fourth hand (the green hand with the large arrow head, or the GMT hand) that circles the dial in 24 hours.  The great innovation at the time was to create a rotating bezel with 24 hour markers that can be adjusted as one moves to different timezones.

There are two primary ways to make use of the GMT feature.  First, with the bezel marker set to 12 o’clock, change the GMT to point to the current Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) which is the same as the timezone in London. Change the hour hands and set it to the current timezone.  With the GMT-Master II this is done easily as the minutes move with the GMT hand when the crown (unscrewed) is pulled two positions and the hours hand moves by itself when the crown is in the first position.

Rolex GMT Master II 2 Rolex GMT Master II Ref. 116713 LN Watch Review

That way, the GMT hand will indicate the current GMT reference time and using the bezel, one can move forward or backward to match the difference between GMT and the timezone you want to know.  So in the pictures in this post, my GMT-Master II shows the time in US PDT and the GMT hand shows US EST which is -5 hours from GMT (or -4 hours as in now for daylight savings time).

The second way, is to use the GMT hand and the bezel to indicate your home time.  As you travel to different timezones, you can change to local time by unscrewing the crown and pulling it in the first position and turning it.  In this second usage mode, only two times are readable and since the bezel is not being used for timezone changes, it’s not the most effective use of the watch’s features.

The GMT-Master II reviewed here is the two-tone gold and stainless version.  It uses Rolex’s famous oyster case at 40 mm and it weighs in at 160 grams.  The weight is due in part to the gold material and to Rolex’s usage of high-grade 904L steel which is forged completely in-house and is supposed to be highly polishable and very resistant to corrosion.  The gold is solid 18-karat which is also used in the bezel and the dial markers.

Rolex GMT Master II 5 Rolex GMT Master II Ref. 116713 LN Watch Review

Two of my favorite features, which are new in this model, are the oysterlock with easylink clasp and the ceramic bezel.  First, the clasp. It is secured with two locks, the first to close the bracelet and the second to lock it with a fall over gold buckle adorned with the Rolex crown logo.  It is by far my favorite clasp on a steel bracelet watch as it is comfortable yet very secure.  It has a feel that you must wear to understand… simply superb.

In this version, reference 116713 LN, one of the main new innovations is the use of a ceramic material for the bezel dubbed Cerachrom. According to Rolex, the result is a virtually scratch-proof bezel.  Rolex also created a special patented nano-particle process to paint the bezel markers with gold, guaranteeing that they will remain timeless like the gold links.

Rolex GMT Master II 10 Rolex GMT Master II Ref. 116713 LN Watch Review

In addition, what sets this bezel apart is the feel when turning it.  The resistance is measured and the fluted marks make it easy to grip.  It’s simply a joy to use and I look forward to changing it to check different times, even when I usually leave it to show EST time…

Like all Rolexes, the movement is in-house and for this version, contains the Rolex Parachrom hairspring which is supposed to be better at resisting the negative effects of magnetic fields and thus keeping an accurate beat over the years.  The sapphire crystal has some of the best anti-reflective coating (AR) I have ever seen on a watch.  This makes the bezel visible at even the thinnest of angles…

The crystal contains a magnifying bump above the date.  This makes the date visible at a glance.  Some might see this as an unnecessary blemish on an otherwise perfect and symmetrical design but I believe that it is very functional and in time, I learned to appreciate and actually like this feature quite a bit.

Rolex GMT Master II 9 Rolex GMT Master II Ref. 116713 LN Watch Review

The GMT-Master II reference 116713 LN retails for $ 11,750 for the two-tone gold and steel version reviewed here.  There is also an all-steel version, reference 116710 LN ($ 7,900) and an all-gold reference 116718 LN ($ 29,500).  Rolex also makes a yellow gold version with a green dial and various versions in white and yellow gold adorned with diamonds and other precious gems which all go for well above the $ 30,000 price point.

If I have any negative feelings about this watch is that the gold links will scratch.  Mine did, ever so slightly after I wore it the very first time.  Of course, this proneness to scratches is one of the consequences of wearing a gold watch (the material is relatively soft, compared to steel) and since I love the look of the watch so much, every blemish is accentuated in my eyes.

Besides this small nitpick, I would say that if you want a timeless classic that you can wear everyday for the rest of your life while lifting your spirits and confidence, then the Rolex GMT-Master II is the watch to consider getting.  It won’t be unique and you can expect to see a few others wearing it at a wedding or the next business meeting… However, you can also rest assured that you are wearing a superbly crafted timepiece that is simply superlative.

Of all the stunning lots in this week’s Christie’s sale in Geneva, one that particularly caught our eye, and the eye of some serious watch collectors, was a mythical prototype Zenith El Primero. This watch was one of 25 prototypes, of which an unknown number survive to this day. Turns out that intrest in the watch ran beyond the typical collector, with Zenith themselves getting right in the thick of bidding.

IWC Pilot’s watch Saint Exupery is an honorary celebration of aviation icon Antoine de Saint-Exupéry marking his first inspirational flight a century ago. IWC’s declaration making 2012 the year of Pilot’s Watches is well in keeping with this sixth special edition timepiece.

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, aviator and author, became enthralled with aviation at the ripe age of 12 at an airfield known as the aerodrome of Ambérieu. A little white lie boarded him passage onto a W2 plane with two rounds around the field which ultimately ignited Saint-Exupery lifetime passion for aviation. IWC’s inspired Saint Exupery watch celebrates and rekindles his passion with its classic design and styling.

Saint Exupery takes flight in a stunning finely contoured 18-carat red gold case, impressive polished silky-matte finishes and a tobacco colored sun-reflective pattern dial, classically stated chronograph sub-dials along with a distinguished brown colored calfskin strap with definitive cream-colored quilted stitching which identifies this chronograph as a typical “Saint Ex”. The sapphire crystal has anti-reflective coating on both sides and is carefully sealed against drops in air pressure. The caseback exhibits a fine etching of the last plane Saint-Exupéry flew, the Lightning P-38, which lead to his demise on July 31, 1994.

Technical Attributes and Features of the Saint Exupery:

o Sixth tribute watch to Antoine de Saint-Exupéry Pilot’s Watch Chronograph, with mechanical chronograph movement

IWC and Antoine de Saint- Exupéry heirs have been collaborating on watch designs commemorating his remarkable achievement since 2006. Saint- Exupéry was well known for his published work “The Little Prince,” the best known French story in the world. IWC Saint Exupery watch encompasses and celebrates the 100th year of his first flight with its very design and classic appeal. Each of the well structured elements, finishes and touches committed to Saint Exupery watch design exhibits IWC’s meticulous craftsmanship which enhances its overall appeal.
